Mountain Biking – History
Saturday, November 7th, 2009
People use bicycles for many different reasons. They are a great means of transport for getting to and from work, you can fit your shopping into the baskets available to attach to the front, and they provide a wonderful way to travel when on holiday and exploring different areas. People have always ridden off road as well as on it, but the history of mountain biking really begins more than thirty years ago, in the 1970’s. Modern bike designs have made the sport more accessible to more people, and the history of mountain biking certainly shows it is now even more popular than ever.
But although mountain biking is now enjoyed all over the world, it began life in California, America. A group of cycle enthusiasts decided to try out some downhill runs on bikes that would now seem antiquated to many of us. The dirt tracks were much the same as many mountain bike race courses today, but the bikes have changed considerably over the intervening years. Those races became famous, and before long similar races were taking place along tracks at locations in many different countries.
As new materials and ways of building bikes have come into existence, it has become easier to build a bike that is capable of withstanding everything a rough off road terrain has to throw at it. Stronger lighter frames and better gears have made mountain biking easier for more people to attempt. The history of mountain biking shows that the earliest riders began to adapt their bikes to get the best from those downhill runs and routes, and so the mountain bikes that we know today began to evolve.
At the time, the only type of bicycle you could buy was intended to be ridden on the road. Although people did ride off road it wasn’t popular enough to warrant a bike designed specifically for that use. But the bikers in California changed all that. The history of mountain biking began with them, and they began to rethink the way that bicycles were made in order to create a design that could handle all the obstacles and conditions the off road trails could throw at it. So the next time you grab hold of your own mountain bike and go for a ride – perhaps across a muddy field, or down a steep slippery slope on those knobbly tires – you should think of the pioneers of the 1970’s.

Friday, October 16th, 2009
This article throws light on the evolution of the mountain biking. It also emphasizes on people of that decade, the geographical area and the equipment invention as the major factors in the evolution of mountain biking activity and its sport popularity.
If you are the one wondering on mountain biking and thinking how it actually came into existence than this article definitely enriches you with loads of knowledge.
Basically there are three spheres or you may call it faces in the existence and evolution of the most fun giving attractive and exciting sport mountain biking. The major role was played by the people of those decades.
In 1960s the life in San Francisco went very hectic and the people there became totally frustrated with the hectic lifestyle. They tend to do anything in order to escape the hectic lifestyle. Their craze for living their life deprive of stress took San Franciscans to Marin County which was less urbanized without hectic life schedules.
Empty mind helps people create new adventure. Thus the similar adventure evolved in this case also. Their love for bicycling and the mountainous area led to mountain bicycling. This in turn evolved into mountain biking leading to biking races in fire fax city. Then people started getting excited and crazy to break the track record set by the previous champs. Later on these races were cancelled because of the high life risk involved and the low prize value that the race conductors fixed.
Next most important aspect in the mountain biking evolution was the geographical area effect. The racing was closed but it continued to become popular and dominantly affected the generation’s minds. The Mount Tamalpais in California was considered and honored as the birthplace of mountain biking.
There came a major turn in the history with the invention of motor bikes specifically for mountain biking. People started being more aware and concerned about the safety of the biker. Thus they started taking measures to evolve the bicycles to an extent of perfection. The perfection was truly demarcated when they replaced poor and typical breaking mechanism of ordinary bikes with cantilever breaks. The cantilever breaks are lighter and smaller and they added safety precaution for the bikers.
Not just that they even added gears of special designs to facilitate the bikers in order to better scale the various heights of the mountains and hills. Thus the mountain biking became popular day by day and people started becoming more and more confident in breaking previous records there by winning honors. And riding tandem bikes here would be a better choice in this regard. And I need not state now the nowadays, in today’s scenario mountain biking specially downhill and extreme mountain biking are having the same respect as any other sports in the world. The mountain biking is taken as a great enjoyment and thrilling adventure by today’s generations. This is no more limited to expert stunt performers.
