Golf Putting Tips From the Professionals

November 27th, 2009

The best way to make quick improvement from your putting is to spend more time working on your distance control. Why is this? The majority of your approach shots will most likely end up leaving you a medium to long range distance putt from the flagstick.

To get you started here are some very simple and useful tips:

Align Your Feet, Shoulders And Your Head Perfectly Parallel To Your Putting Line

It sounds obvious enough, but it’s amazing how many golfers I see that don’t do this. Start by aiming your putter face at the target then align your head, feet and shoulders to that line. This is the best method of getting an accurate perspective of the right line to the hole. If you are having any trouble of viewing the correct pathway to the hole with your eyes, then this is undoubtedly caused by an inaccurate view.

Golf Putting Technique Isn’t Everything – Just Putt The Ball

It’s not about looking good on the putting green, it’s about getting the job done. That’s one of the best golf putting tips going around. When it comes to putting, the end result will always far outweigh how the putting stroke looks. Ask any tour professional and they will tell you the same thing.

Take Just One Look At Your Target Line and Just Swing!

One of the most important changes I made which produced some of my best results on the putting greens, was to minimize the amount of time I stood over the ball analyzing and thinking about the putt. In fact this was one of the single most important changes I made that helped me take over 6 strokes off my putts per round.

It’s important to still maintain your focus, while speeding up the process a fraction. If you spend too much time thinking about your golf putting technique, length of stroke, and ground conditions will cause you fear. Instead, get yourself set up over the ball, take one quick look at your target, hold that image in your head, and simply swing the putter blade. You’ll be amazed at how many more putts you will hole in your next round.

Find The Sweet Spot Of The Putting Blade, And Use It

Another key to making consistent putts is to strike the ball from the sweet spot on your putter. Having trouble finding the sweet spot? Just hold the club vertically in between your thumb and index finger. Make sure you are holding the putter directly in front of your eyes.

Now tap on the putter clubface with something small and firm, like a pen or a golf tee. Every time you hit the clubface and the putter head twists, this is not the sweet spot. Continue hitting the putter face until it moves straight back. This is the sweet spot. Target it every time. If this seems too complex then the good news is most new putters today are designed with a painted on target/sweet spot that you can’t miss. One of the seemingly most obvious golf putting tips but one that will definitely help your putting.
