Utilise the Fear in your Golf Mind to Hit More Greens and Fairways

How can golf psychology help you in overcoming the fear you have about hitting a bad shot on the golf course? Many people interpret this as classic fear of someone suffering from the putting yips who’s about to putt or the person suffering form the shanks and about to hit a short iron. But you can get the same type of fear when faced with a shot that you “always” hit badly or a hole that you always play badly. Perhaps your ball seems inexorably drawn to those trees on the right or that bunker on the left. Maybe it’s a water hazard that you just “never” seem to be able to carry.
Now one of the first things I learned in golf psychology was that “What the Thinker thinks, the Prover proves” to quote Robert Anton Wilson in his famous book about how the mind works, Prometheus Rising. In hypnosis terms this means that whatever we consciously think about we unconsciously make happen. In simple terms, if we consciously think about an ice-cream we unconsciously decide we want one and instinctively begin to taste one. If you’re driving on a motorway and someone draws your conscious attention to something way off to the right, you may suddenly notice yourself unconsciously steering in that direction.
Have you ever noticed how if you tell someone to not do something accidentally, that they automatically seem to do it anyway? This is especially true with children, so if you say to a child, “don’t spill your milk”, then don’t be surprised if they to do just that. Contrary to what some believe, children don’t do this out of spite, it’s just what you made them consciously think about.
So what’s all this got to do with the fear of hitting a bad shot then Andrew? Well, you have to consciously think the bunker you don’t want to go in to fear going in it. The same goes for your fear of hitting a shank or yipping a putt. But, I hear you say, I make a point of thinking to myself “don’t hit it in the bunker” rather than just thinking about the bunker. Well, it makes no difference to the outcome, because you have to think of a thing in order to not do it. If I say don’t think of a blue elephant, you have to imagine a blue elephant to know what I’m talking about. The same goes for thinking of not hitting the ball into the bunker. If that’s in your head when you hit the ball, then you’ll unconsciously do your best to it there.
I’ve hear Paul McKenna tell a good story about this. He had a top golfer, one who’d already won major championships, come to him for help. The golfer explained that he was consistently hitting shots into bunkers and not just any bunkers. These were the bunkers he specifically wanted to avoid and he wasn’t just rolling into them, his ball was landing right in the middle of them. Paul watched him play a few holes then gave him a simple verbal instruction to follow for the next few holes. Amazingly, the champion golfer started hitting almost every shot just where he wanted to. So what did Paul say to him? He told him to decide on where he wanted to land the ball on each shot and then focus on not hitting the ball there. He was now consciously thinking about his target, not the bunkers.
So next time you’re out playing golf and you start saying to yourself “don’t go in that bunker”, “don’t shank this shot” or something similar. Then compensate for your fear by stopping and rethinking your target taking into account whatever you’d like to avoid. Now focus your conscious mind on that new target before handing over control to your unconscious golf mind to hit the shot. Visualizing Whilst on the Golf Course – Part 1

How can you build visualization into your playing routine? Most golfers have a pre shot routine in terms of waggling the club or practice swings, yet fewer have a mental routine to match. This is a great shame, because the mental routine is the most important. Everything in life starts with a thought. You have to think straight if you want the golf ball to go straight, so to speak. You have to plan the golf shot mentally before you can transmit this information to the clubface. Or put another way, how can you impart the right information from the clubface to the golf ball if you are unclear about your shot?
You may think that you are clear about the shot – that you want to hit the golf ball down the fairway. But let us draw a comparison here. Golf balls know nothing, they don’t have minds and they don’t have prior knowledge. If a stranger to your town asked for directions how would you reply? Presumably the answer would be detailed, and you might even use gestures to help make the directions easier to follow. You may even get pen and paper out and draw a map. Unless you took the time to explain the directions fully and precisely that stranger is likely to get lost. The same thing happens to golf balls.
I’m not joking. This is what actually happens. Unless you want your golf balls to take a different route to the one which you desire (and end up getting themselves lost), you need to have clear and precise intent when taking your shot. You need to mentally plan the golf shot, and picturing the desired outcome is all important. A picture is worth a thousand words. Picture the shot, the distance, direction, trajectory, spin; See the ball landing and coming to a stop. Then take the shot. By doing this, the golf ball, like the stranger in your town, stands a far better chance of reaching the desired destination.
It only takes a couple of seconds to visualize your shot and all you need to do is to build this into your pre shot routine. To make it into a habit, you need to do it consistently; Visualize EVERY shot before you take it, not just putts or tee shots, EVERY shot. It won’t take long before this type of visualization is so habitual that it’s impossible to hit a shot without doing it. It will become as automatic as brushing your teeth morning and night.
Mental skills are a part of the game of golf which you can practice easily from your armchair when conditions are inclement outside, and also when its sunny. Don’t forget that every time you vividly imagine a perfect shot your brain doesn’t know the difference between that and a real shot and so every time you visualize great shots you are strengthening the neural pathways in your brain which create an expectation of achieving the perfect outcome. There is no excuse for being “bored”; Even when you’re in the check out queue in Safeway you can be visualizing great golf shots.

Information And Advice On Purchasing Used Golf Equipment

Golf is a great sport enjoyed by millions of people around the world. It is also one of the world’s most difficult sports, and for people with a tendency to become frustrated when things don’t go how they wanted them to, golf may not be the right sport for you.
If you’ve never played golf before, or played only crazy golf or only played on a small sized pitch and putt course with a seven iron and a putter, a game of golf on a full sized course is a different ball game. Not only do you require more golf clubs, but you require more patience, and also more energy to take you around the full course.
So if you’re going to play on a full sized golf course and don’t have any clubs, what do you do, you can either:
A: Go to your local golf shop, purchase the most expensive clubs you can find and when you find out you can’t play like Tiger Woods with them wish you’d have bought some cheaper ones.
B: Rent some clubs or borrow some from a friend.
C: Buy some reasonably priced used golf equipment from somewhere.
If you have never played golf before and are not sure you’ll like it, it is recommended that you borrow a set of clubs from a trusting friend who will need much reassurance they will come back in one piece. If however you have played golf before and you like the game, you may wish to consider purchasing some used golf equipment.
Simply because you are playing on a full sized golf course, this doesn’t mean you need the full amount of clubs. The Planning and Organization of a Golf Tournament

A golf tournament is always a great experience for everyone involved. It is a great opportunity to gather friends, family and the community all together at the same time. Whether planning a small tournament for friends of a city-wide event for charity, having a good detailed plan will help the event run smoothly and allow everyone to enjoy themselves. The following is simply some steps and advice to help you get started with the planning and organization of a golf tournament.
One of the beginning tasks is to project the number of golfers to participate in the tournament and how many volunteers will be needed on the course. This is one of the most important things when organizing a tournament because it will affect the golf course it will take place on, the amount of prizes you will give away and the format of the tournament.
Before reserving any courses it is important to determine your budget for the whole tournament. Your budget will determine the course you use, participants’ entry fee, the prizes you buy, food and drinks offered, and date of the tournament.
Next, choose a date for the tournament. You will have to be flexible with the dates based on availability of the golf courses so this decision will probably be made simultaneously with the location of the tournament. Have several dates in mind when you begin calling courses and checking availability. If you hold the tournament during the week is will be less expensive to use the course but it may be difficult for people to attend. The number of golfers participating in the tournament and the skill level of those participating should be among your deciding factors in choosing the location for the tournament. Try to book the course as far in advance as possible. Keep in mind that some courses may require an up-front fee to reserve tee-times for large events.
Pick a format to follow for the tournament. The format will differ whether you are planning a team golf tournament or a singles tournament. Most tournaments just for fun or for charity follow a two-man or four-man scramble. However, some other formats that could be used are match play, best ball or alternate shot.
Prizes are an integral part of all tournaments. Plan out all the different types of prizes you will award and the category and criteria for winning them. Some category ideas are longest or shortest drive, longest putt, best overall score, closest to the hole, hole in one, highest team score. If your tournament is for fun it’s a good idea to have gag awards like worst overall score, most golf balls lost, or, always a favorite, worst golf outfit You should pick several different types of prizes to award to all those who attend. For family events, be sure to choose prizes for all ages. Trophies are always a good idea for those who actually rank in the tournament. Putting the name and date of the tournament on the prizes make them fun memorabilia.
Pick the cost of the entry fee and the deadline for participants to pay that fee. Next, if you plan on anyone attending you need to announce and advertise the tournament. Be sure to include the golf course’s location, dates, entry fee, sign-up deadlines, format and benefiting charities in the announcements.

Do You Do “Basil Fawlty” Impressions On The Golf Course? – Part 2

Believe it or not, everyone can learn to control their own internal response to things that previously triggered anger; to learn to control their body rather than letting it control them. To learn to slow their body down rather than letting it speed up. The purpose of anger management is to learn how to change the way you react to your “anger triggers”. You can’t change external events, but you can change your emotional and physiological reactions to them.
You can use hypnotic suggestion, NLP techniques and positive visualization to assist in controlling your anger. Firstly, it is important to learn to relax. This is easy if you know how, but difficult if you don’t. You can be taught simple relaxation which you can practice regularly, thereby “bringing you down” a level or two, and so less likely to respond to anger triggers. You can learn to relax quickly and easily whilst on the golf course; you have the ability to relax just as quickly as you have the ability to get yourself wound up.
Secondly, it is necessary to explore the way in which you think and learn how to change that. Angry people tend to speak in raised voices, swear, move jerkily, etc. They see big pictures in their minds eye (usually in dramatic Technicolor) of what they don’t want to happen (“I know it’s going into those trees”) and respond to this self-created image. Angry people tend to talk to themselves with nasty, aggressive voices and chunter away to themselves about the unfairness of things (“why is it my ball that’s always lost?”), or how life is against them, or how unlucky they are. You can learn techniques that will enable you to turn the volume down on these internal voices, speak in a nicer tone and to see nicer pictures in your mind’s eye; i.e. to change your instinctive response to these triggers.
It’s also worth exploring whether your overall belief system in flawed. For example if you believe that you “always” have bad luck or that such and such “never” comes your way, you will not notice when things are going well, on or off the golf course; You’ve programmed yourself to only see the bad. And when bad things happen, you’ve visualized your own angry response, etc. Thus, it is important to explore and alter wider belief structures about yourself and your world.
Anger is often induced by very real problems and frustrations. If you have a belief structure that says you can handle anything no matter how bad it is, you will respond positively to the situation, and get on with the task of taking your next shot, without becoming angry. You will therefore stop the tendency to jump to negative and inaccurate conclusions. If, on the other hand, the belief structure of “nothing ever works for me” comes into play, angry feelings are triggered and the result is negative in every way – you feel angry, stopping yourself from thinking straight, and then make poor strategy choices and then who knows where the golf ball will end up? The problem simply becomes compounded.
One’s expectations must be examined. Are they realistic? Many angry people simply expect too much or want something “right now” and then get angry when the impossible doesn’t materialize. It is important to restructure such expectations and give them a “reality check”. Do you expect every shot to be perfect? The pros don’t expect that. Do you expect to play golf on a Saturday morning, after a few beers on Friday night, no practice in the week and hit every ball perfectly? If so, it’s time to run that reality check for yourself!
A feeling of inadequacy or insecurity is frequently the heart of the problem. (A fear that you’re not good enough, for example). This feeling is then redirected (either consciously or subconsciously) into the emotion of anger, as this angry feeling prevents you from feeling hurt. Thus it is important to change this belief structure as well; to feel that you are good enough in every way. Anger may also really be directed at oneself, but projected outwards onto another person or object.
Balance is of course the goal state to be achieved. Positive strategies towards real problems need to be learned, as do positive beliefs about yourself. The good news is that you are not born angry. This is a learnt response and so it can be unlearned and replaced with a different strategy which works for you, instead of against you.
It’s up to you to decide. Do you want to stop “Basiling”, to learn to stop being angry on the golf course and to enjoy your golf from now on?

What is Your Golfing Personality?

It is important to be “in the now” in order to be fully aware of what we should be aware of whilst on the golf course. Perception involves all the ways of becoming aware of things, people, happenings, or ideas. Once a person has perceived something they will make sense of that “reality” in their own way – they will make a judgment, come to their own conclusion about the “reality” of the situation. Judgment involves all the ways of coming to conclusions about what has been perceived. If people differ systematically in what they perceive and in how they reach conclusions, then it follows that they will differ in levels of motivation, acquisition of skills and in their reactions to situations.
There are many ways in which people differ. On a physical scale, we differ in height, shape, weight, fitness, flexibility, and so on. And our golf swing will differ from one individual to another because of these obvious physical differences. Golf is played from the platform of you, the person, and you are unique, and thus you will have your own unique swing. And yet so many golfers try to imitate someone else’s swing which they perceive as perfect; and it probably is perfect…for that other person – it suits their individual characteristics, both physically and psychologically.
On the psychological side, some of us are more relaxed and easy going whilst others are more easily excitable. Some of us do things slowly and deliberately, whilst others do things at great speed. Some of us are very controlled, others not. Again, our golf will reflect such individual characteristics.
Awareness is the first step on the journey to mastery of anything in life. If you are aware of your individual methods of perception and the judgments that ensue, then you can change your reaction to situations, you can change your levels of motivation and also your ability to acquire skills. And golf is a game of reactions, motivation and skill.
If you are aware of reacting as “Mr. Angry”, for example, you can do a little work on this and learn to respond in a different way. I can hear you saying “but this is how I am, I always get angry because I care” and so on. But the fact is you don’t HAVE to get angry, you CAN learn to react in a different way, and you CAN take control, so long as you WANT to. And so, with a little effort on your part, and maybe a little help from a hypnotherapist or golf psychologist, you can change your reactions to all sorts of situations on the golf course. Wouldn’t that be useful?
Not only can you change your reactions, you can raise your levels of motivation, overcome negative thoughts and feelings and take a more direct route along the road to mastery. Once you are aware of your own unique characteristics, you know what skills come naturally to you and what skills require a little attention, and as you attend to these mental skills you will find that you can acquire them in a relatively short space of time. Let’s face it; if you are good at your long game but not so good at chipping, you know that if you work on the chipping it will get better. Taking the same approach to your mental skills will work just as effectively. They simply require a little attention on your part.
One particular aspect of personality, however, will always remain pretty constant and unchanged, and to fight this aspect would be a complete waste of time and effort. There is an individual tempo of the personality. There is a natural tempo with which we all perform any deliberately willed action. And if there is one thing which is vital in golf is to have a good rhythm, a good tempo. This does NOT mean that you have to have the same tempo as Tiger, or Ernie or Phil. Your best rhythm, your best tempo, is your OWN natural, instinctive tempo or rhythm. You don’t have to slow your golf swing down or speed it up; simply become AWARE of your natural tendencies and swing the club accordingly.
Ask yourself these two simple questions and you will easily work out your own best golfing tempo:
Do you speak quickly or slowly?
Do you walk quickly or slowly?
Next time you swing your golf club, become aware of what tempo feels best to you. As Gary Player says “There is a definite “feeling” and this feeling is to be developed and looked for”. Instead of trying to swing at the speed you think you should, allow yourself to become aware of the feel of your golf swing and discover for yourself what feels best, and you will find that your own most comfortable swing speed, your most comfortable rhythm and tempo, will in fact simply reflect your personality type. By swinging your golf club with the rhythm and tempo of your own personality you will produce your best results on the golf course.
You will never become a master of someone else’s golf game, but you can become a master of your own game. To quote Pia Nilsson, “Trust your swing; it is your signature”.

Balance and the Golf Swing

When’s the last time you practiced standing on one foot and holding your balance? Probably never. Yet it’s a key ingredient in our daily lives and that includes playing golf.
Balance is one of those things that we pretty much take for granted. Not many of us think about it, nor practice it, even though it can keep us from seriously injuring ourselves and help us perform daily tasks better. How many times have you heard of someone – who was in pretty good shape – fall and break something, and was never really the same again? For this reason alone, balance is gaining more press these days, and should be practiced on a regular basis.
Better balance can also impact your performance on the golf course. Almost every aspect of the game is dependent on the golfer’s ability to maintain good balance while in various positions, and often while explosively swinging a golf club.
Whether it’s the longer yardage shots, off the tee and in the fairway, or those finesse ones from 100 yards in or around the green, body control is a must. Altering the stance to accommodate for the type of shot will help the golfer swing the club smoothly and efficiently, resulting in the desired outcome.
For many this is a tough enough task on level ground, but often times these array of golf shots have to be accomplished from uneven lies such as uphill and downhill, or when the ball’s above or below your feet. This demands even a greater need for swing stability as both ground and gravitational forces impact an additional set of circumstances to the golfer, which he now needs to compensate for.
Throw in a little wind, one foot in the bunker, and/or a little fatigue on the back nine and that changes the affect on the body. That’s the beauty or frustration about golf, you really never have the same shot twice. There’s always something different requiring you to alter something to make the shot, and in every situation, stabilization or balance plays a part.
Age may have something to do with lack of balance, but I’ve seen a lot of young players have trouble with the simplest of balance assessments. Yes, there are physiological changes that occur as we age that will impact balance, but for the most part, we can prevent that from occurring.
Lower body strength, for example, plays a key role in balance. Improving strength and coordination in all three planes of movement, side-to-side, front-to-back, and rotationally, can enhance balance. A good start is with the quadriceps (front thigh), glutes (buttocks), calves, and abductors and adductors (inner and outer thigh). These will also help you better control the lower body during the golf swing .
Practicing balance is also something that you can do to improve balance. Get into your golf stance (as if you were standing at address over the ball, but with your hands folded across your chest instead of out in front of you) and then shift the weight over to one foot while you lift the other foot off the ground. Work up to a solid 10 seconds on each foot without losing your balance. It’ll take time, be patient and it will get better. If you have extreme difficulty with this, you may want to check with your physician, as there are other factors that can influence balance.
Once this is accomplished, to make the exercise more golf specific, as golf is not a static sport, balance on one foot and then slowly rotate your shoulders back and forth as if swinging a golf club. Practice that till you can do 5 to 10 rotations to each side, and with each leg, without losing your balance.
Don’t take balance for granted. Take steps to improve your balance and you’ll improve not only the quality of life, but the quality of your golf game as well.

Buying golf equipment can be like dumping money into a
money pit, but armed with some knowledge you can save
time and money in selecting the right clubs for
yourself. As with most things in life, you can spend a
lot or you can spend a little several times before you
get what you really need.
If you are first starting out and not completely sure
you want to commit to this addictive game, you should
either rent clubs at the golf course, or buy a starter
set of clubs.
Buying a set of started clubs enables you to become
accustomed to them; enabling you to concentrate on
your swing instead of wondering how this set of
miss-matched clubs you just rented are going to work
out.
As you become better at the game, you should invest in
a better set of clubs, fitted to you.
Generally, a set includes a driver, one or two fairway

driver separately. Some players want a driver to give
them more accuracy; some need the distance.
There are numerous balls available and the box will
usually have a chart on the back and direct you to the
right ball for your needs. As you learn the game and
get better at it, you should experiment with different

Cart Golf Bags To Preserve Your Strength For The Game

Cart golf bags are designed to fit onto a golf cart so that you do not have to carry the bag and so can conserve all your strength for the game. You should also make sure that your choice of the cart golf bags on the market has enough pockets for your needs. You may need pockets for your spare golf balls, tees, accessories such as divot tools, golf gloves, rainwear and an umbrella fastener.

If you love golf, you probably like to play as often as you can. Getting to the golf course is not always easy, due to time restraints and other obligations. That doesn’t mean you don’t have time to play some golf games when you can’t hit the course. A lot of families like to golf together, and this is often very expensive. There are golf games you can play on your home gaming system, and also some golf games you can do in your own back yard. Not only will you be spending quality time together, you can also increase your skill.
Because my husband loves to play golf, my daughter has developed an interest in golf. I don’t mind playing, but I can’t watch it on television. Once I start watching, I’m off for a nap. It never fails. Those two, however, can sit there together and watch it for hours. They have also made up a few of their own golf games to play in the back yard. It’s always been something special they share, and has helped both of them play better. Granted, my daughter isn’t a master golfer, but she’s getting the hang of things rather quickly.
One of the golf games they play is rather simple, but they always have fun doing it. They set up stakes in the yard, and then practice putting. The best putts roll to rest up against the stake, much like you would aim for the hole in a regular game of golf. While this doesn’t seem like much, it has surprised me how much better my daughter does when we play miniature golf. This also helps my husband from losing his patience, because it is just a game in the back yard, and no one is keeping score.
You can make up your own golf games like this one, and as long as you aren’t driving the ball through your neighbor’s windows, you should have hours of fun playing with your family, and improving your skills. You can also find back yard golf games that are ready made. Some you can use to practice your swing by hitting a ball connected to something. No matter how hard to swing, the ball won’t go too far and cause any damage.
On rainy days, you can always fire up the gaming system and play against the big boys. Though my daughter isn’t very good at this, she loves to watch my husband play, and often cheers him on. Not only are they having fun together playing golf games, I’m getting some time to myself.

Perfect Golf Swing

Anyone who spends time on the golf course is looking for the best possible golf swing. Some argue that there is no such thing but after witnessing some of the pros at work I would have to differ. The skill required for this game is quite imposing if you really think about it. Nevertheless, the perfect golf swing is attainable.
First of all we have to recognize that golf is a game that is as intellectual as it is physical. My husband describes it as a game of chess that involves gross motor skills. He has spent a lot of hours trying to develop the best possible swing that he can master however I think that his approach is all wrong.
Even though he recognizes the cognitive aspects of the game he seems to forget about them when he hits the golf ball. He also seems to think that the perfect golf swing is a complete myth that has been developed to torture golfers around the world. However, he is looking at the whole thing backwards. So are many other golfers.
Many professionals would agree that there is no such thing as a perfect golf swing. This elusive skill has seemed to develop a personality. Many people seek it to no avail and many decide to write it off as a myth so they can sleep at night. Sound dramatic? Well, it is to an avid golfer.
Part of the appeal of the game is its challenging nature. The combination of physical and mental control is great with the feat of hitting the ball on target. Many people look to the perfect golf swing as a personification of the challenge. It is no longer an action, but a kind of Holy Grail for the golfing community.
It is important to recognize that the perfect golf swing is fundamentally an action. Sometimes thinking too much can actually have an adverse effect on your swing. Perhaps the best way to achieve the perfect golf swing is to quit obsessing over it.
When we think too much we hinder our own progress. Many golfers look at the game as a practice in control but this very quest for control might be what is keeping you from the elusive swing. You may find that part of the art of combining the mind and the body in the golf swing has a lot to do with letting go instead of controlling.

Golf Course Mowers: When to Repower the Engine

Spring and summer are the seasons of the small engine vehicle. It is during these months that the lawn mowers, landscaping equipment, and golf carts get their heaviest use. It is also during this time of year that they get the most attention. These vehicles can last for many seasons over many years when properly cared for. These engines need proper attention on a regular basis so that their performance can be maintained or fixed quickly before they evolve into bigger and more serious issues. There will be times when issues with the engine cannot be fixed by simple maintenance or small fixes. When this happens, a complete overhaul or replacement of the engine may be necessary.
It is important that the owner of one of these small engine vehicles check all other possibilities before overhauling or replacing the motor all together. Odd sounds in the engine or less than ideal performance can be fixed with oil or other fluid changes, carburetor fixes, or a thorough cleaning.
The following are signs that your engine needs serious help, and may require overhauling or reporting.
Noise
Excessive noise when the mower or cart is running is the first sign that something is wrong. Knocking or banging can be caused by a worn out engine or a piece that has worn out or is about to. Don’t jump the gun, however. Noises happen. Investigate the engine through regular maintenance to see if these noises are new, understandable or fixable before going down the replacement or overhaul route. Unusual sounds may be fixed quickly. Persistent noises are signs of repair or replacement.
Mechanical
According to Samuel M. Goldwasser of Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ, broken, damaged, or bent engine parts are a strong indicator that an overhaul is needed. These types of problems may cause your mower or cart to fail to start. If the engine is able to turn over and start, damaged parts may cause vehicle shaking or vibration. Some damaged engine parts may be possible to replace separately. Major pieces, however, may require a complete engine overhaul.
Compression Changes
Low compression is caused by low oil levels or strain on rings, valves or gaskets and will result in the inability to start or keep a vehicle started. Like an automobile, failure to remain started is a clear indicate that there are problems related to the starter system and/or engine cylinders. Low compression, according to Goldwasser, may not require a complete overhaul, however, but may require replacement of the rings or cylinder head.
Overhauling a mower or cart is something that some people are comfortable doing on their own. For those that feel boring holes into cylinders and carburetors is a daunting task, repowering your small engine with a small engine replacement kit may be a better alternative to overhauling your small engine vehicle yourself. These kits are rebuilt, higher powered small engines that come with all the necessary replacement parts and clear instructions for installing it. Either will save you money in comparison with replacing the entire piece of equipment, but one may be easier and more efficient than the other.

Better Putting in your Golf Mind

I hear that Darren Clarke’s looking for putting improvement through golf psychology and working again with Bob Rotella. I know that Darren has worked in the past with Golf Psychologist Dr Karl Morris – after all, I’ve read Golf – The Mind Factor, the book they published together back in 2005. However, for some reason I didn’t know that he’d worked with Bob Rotella.
I can’t say how delighted I am to see Darren’s back competing in the 2009 US Open at Bethpage Black after qualifying as one of the top 15 in the European Money List last year. He’s only played in the US Open once, in 2006 at Winged Foot, since he pulled out at Pinehurst in 2005 to be with his wife who was seriously ill.
Moving back to Darren’s putting psychology problems, I was interested to hear that he has considered putting to be his Achilles heel for most of his career. I was also interested to read how hard he’s been pushing himself over the years to improve his putting. It’s interesting to note that Bob Rotella has tried to get him to go much easier on himself. In fact, Darren’s been quoted recently as saying “He says just go and play and let the results happen themselves.” That sounds like good advice to me!
It’s intriguing how similar that is to what Bob’s been telling Padraig Harrington about his over practising and excessive focus on his swing changes. As I suggested in my earlier article, entitled Play your Best with Golf Psychology Before Changing your Unconscious Golf Swing, the destructive shots you hit are more likely to come from your conscious thoughts than from your unconscious golf swing.
If I was advising Darren Clarke “blind”, so to speak, then apart from helping him to use golf hypnosis of course, I’d encourage him to build on a couple of mental golf approaches from the great Jack Nicklaus. Firstly, I’d suggest that before he strikes a putt he imagines “seeing” the line the ball will run on and “watching” the ball rolling along that imaginary line and dropping in the hole before popping back out and running back along the line back to his putter head.
Secondly, I’d help him find a way to remember every good putt he’s ever holed and to develop amnesia for every bad one. There’s a story I’ve heard about Jack Nicklaus that illustrates this perfectly.
Jack was giving a presentation to a group of eager and attentive golfers at his son’s university. During the speech, Jack makes the comment that he has never three putted on the back nine of a major championship or missed from inside of six feet on the last hole.
As Jack opens the floor to take questions, a man puts up his hand and says “Jack you say you have never missed from inside of six feet on the last hole in a major, but I was watching you last year in the US Seniors Open and that’s exactly what you did.” Jack looked at the man with those piercing blue eyes and repeated what he had said. “But Mr Nicklaus,” the man insisted, “I saw it, I have it on film, I can send it to you if you like.” “No need”, Jack replied, “I have never missed from inside six feet on the last hole of a major. Any more questions?”
Now, has Jack ever missed from inside of six feet on the last hole of a major? Of course he has! Does he remember it? Not a chance. And do you think he cares that he can’t remember? Some people would probably say that Jack is deluded in his thinking, that it is not based on reality. Well, we all create our own realities and Jack’s seem pretty good to me!

A Couple Of Golf Tips

People are always on the lookout for tips to make their golf game better. Golf isn’t an easy sport to master. Those of us who love the game know that the more information you have regarding the swing, course management, putting, etc. the more chance you have of playing better. That’s why we will take golf tips from almost anyone who’s willing to offer.
So what kind of golf tips can we offer up in this article? Space is limited, so we’ll try to focus only on those tips that are most asked for. First, if you have a bad temper, you probably shouldn’t take up golf. We’re just kidding, really. Actually, golf can be good for your mental state. You may find that you can take out your frustration on the golf course in productive ways and perhaps you can gain better control of that temper!
Since most people have trouble with their setup, our first set of golf tips will deal with the setup.
* Position your body so your body is parallel with the target line * Your feet should be shoulder width apart * With short irons, put the ball in the center of your stance * Middle irons should have the ball placed one ball toward the target side from center * For long irons and fairway woods, place the ball two ball lengths toward the target from center * The ball should be three ball lengths toward the target from center * Balance your weight on the balls of your feet * Bend your knees slightly and keep your spine straight * Move your body from the hips and make it a smooth, fluent motion
Keep your eye on the ball until well after you complete your follow-through swing. If you don’t do this, you will have a tendency to stand up on the ball which will cause you to top the ball. Do this with all shots. Look at the back of the ball and don’t take your eyes off of it until it’s natural to look and see where the ball has gone.
When putting, the best golf tips we can offer up are:
* Visualize the path your ball will travel so that it will go in the hole * Read the green and take into account any dips that may cause your ball to change its direction. Then you can compensate with your aim. * The putting swing is a smooth, pendulum-like action with no wrist break. You will swing with your shoulders and should always keep your head down. * Be sure you put enough speed on the ball so that you will actually make it to the hole. There’s nothing worse than coming up short on a putt. These lead to three putt disasters and can be very frustrating!
There are all sorts of golf tips out there to be found. Take any tips on your golf game that you can find and then try them out to see if they work. You can never have too many tips if you really want to make your golf game better.

Key To Good Golf

Playing good golf is predominantly about having a well planned mental approach to the game. If you lack a good way to control your mental state then you may find it much more difficult to be successful. Quite a few people get dispositional when the round is falling apart. Losing their cool is one of the most common mistakes that that all golfer can make. If you do not stay clam then your golf with be of a lower standard and so will you. There is a considerable amount of different books and audio tapes that can help you establish your golf mentality. It is usually the biggest factor to having a winning round.
The very first thing to thing about when when stepping out onto the golf course is to be as confident as possible. If you are don’t have a lot of faith in yourself as a player then you have a reduced chance of winning the match. Those who are unsure of their own ability usually remember the the things they do badly. Lack of confidence is a huge consideration and can increase your overall net score. For example players with a poor mental approach will think more about the times the play a bad shot than the times they get it right. When people who lack confidence begin their game they are often more uptight than the confident player. The confident player is the golfer who will imagine the good and not the bad when he is golfing. The player who doubts himself only seems the problems ahead. If while you stand on the tee you have doubts about whether you can make the shot then already the shot is more often than not going to be bad. To be a winning golfer you need to think about yourself as a winner even when you are not the winner. This can be pretty challenging but self belief has to come from you. Getting it right is about putting focus on on what you know you have done well and not putting focus on on what you don’t believe you are capable of.
Other important things to read about are patience, enjoying the challenge and overcoming your nerves. Just be sure to remember all the good things that you can do when you are walking up to play the first hole. If you really think about it golf is only a game and you should be able to have a good time whatever the result is. It can be unnerving at times but it can also be great when you do play well . The more you focus on the rounds you have played well the more controlled you will play overall. The more you like playing golf the the lower your score will be, remember that and you will be a much more consistent golfer.

Golfers Mind – Where You Put Your Focus Increases The Likely-Hood Of It Occurring, Good Or Bad

It’s true that what we focus on with our thoughts we get more of. That’s why people who think they are unlucky can’t understand why they keep getting more of it. They are so focussed on these negative events they create the circumstances that make the likelihood of them happening even more.
You could also go down the universal law of attraction theory if you prefer, but if you believe in that then I don’t need to convince you that you get what you think about.
You are going to be on the golf course the way you are off it. Is the glass half full or half empty for you in life in general? You do need to be entirely honest with yourself here because if you think you may be more negatively oriented (glass half empty) then you are going to be more negatively oriented in your thoughts around the golf course.
Lets take an example:
Ball comes to rest in the middle of the fairway, BUT, in an old divot.
Glass half empty. “Oh man what kind of luck is this? (bad) I don’t deserve this, it’s unfair! Now I’ve got a really tough shot that will probably go horrible wrong, and I won’t get to the green now!”
Glass half full. “Well, you just have to love this game! Oh well, this is the way it is and there is no reason why I can’t play a great shot from here. I will just focus on hitting positively down on the ball after I go through my usual routine and then I am going to feel really great when I play a great shot from this position. I love these challenging shots!”
Who do you want to back to pull this shot off? Do you think that the glass half empty golfer is going to play the shot confidently and be holding positive images and feelings of a good shot? Most definitely not.
For the glass half full golfer, the shot is pretty much doomed and the chances of it being bad are greatly enhanced by internal imaging and attitude. When the shot does go wrong this will be used as “proof” of how unjust everything is and how unlucky this golfer is.
The glass half full golfer will be making positive internal representations of the shot he/she wants, greatly enhancing the chances of success. In addition the golfer will be in a confident and happily challenged frame of mind further enhancing the chances of success. When the shot is good their confidence in their own ability to play challenging situations will increase.
On the other hand if the shot is poor then the glass half full person is still going to win because they were faced with a tricky situation and they had the right attitude. They accept that golf is all it’s parts including the bad bounces, old divots and a spike mark or two. They can walk away without their self esteem being battered. The event does not reinforce how “Unlucky” they are unlike the glass half empty person.
Discover who you are more prone to be and if you are glass half empty, resolve to become a positive glass FULL person. It will not only make a difference in your golf but your life too.

Do You Do “Basil Fawlty” Impressions On The Golf Course? – Part 1

Golf is a game and should be fun. Fun is what it’s all about; playing a great game with a few pals. No matter how good a golfer you are and no matter how important your golf may have become to you, it’s still a game and should be enjoyed in the spirit of the game. It’s a recreational activity, which you should find relaxing.
Do you find it relaxing? Or do you find your emotions being affected in a rather different way as you play this great game? Do you find yourself hacking your golf clubs into the ground, or slinging them across the fairway? Do you find yourself muttering four letter words under your breath (or out loud)?
We all have caricatures in our minds of the true “Mr. Angry”. Are you a “Mr. Angry golfer?” If so, would it be handy to be able to change?
Anger is a normal and usually healthy human emotion. When anger is controlled, or managed, it will not cause you, or anyone around you, any harm. But when it is out of control it will become destructive. Uncontrolled anger is a major cause of conflict in both personal and professional relationships, on an off the golf course.
Anger is an emotional state which may vary in intensity and which is accompanied by physiological and biological changes – your heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, adrenaline is secreted at a greater level. Not very helpful when you’re trying to play a game that requires a state of relaxed concentration in order to be able to put your best swing on the golf ball.
Anger is caused by your own perception of events, whether that event is happening now, or in the past, or you are anticipating a future event. It is important that you understand this fact. You create your own anger. Your golf ball may have found its way into the trees, or a plugged lie; there may be a lack of baskets at the range or the tee box may not be level…but “it” did not make you angry…You did.
You will no doubt have wondered how some golfers remain calm, or even laugh, no matter what happens to their ball whilst others “blow” or “flip” at the slightest thing. The difference is that some people have learnt to manage their anger, whilst others have given in to it.
You have probably watched “Fawlty Towers” and laughed at Basil’s antics. But isn’t the entire series based on taking off mismanaged anger and frustration? And the exaggerated body language demonstrates beautifully the actual effect of anger – raised voice, jerky movements, clenched fists, and…a direction for the anger – usually Manuel or Mrs. Fawlty…and the disastrous results that are achieved reflect the destructive effect of uncontrolled anger.
And the equivalent of Basil in golf can be equally amusing some of the time…or perhaps embarrassing, depending on how you see it. The direction for the anger is usually the ball, the clubs, the nearest gorse bush, and so on. In extreme cases the entire trolley and clubs have been known to be launched into water and never retrieved!
The question is how have those non-angry people learnt to manage their anger? How can “Basil” learn to manage his anger? And, more importantly, do you want to control your anger? Because if you don’t want to, you won’t even try. Everyone can change so long as they want to. You’re not born angry, you just haven’t learnt how to manage your anger.

Visualizing Whilst on the Golf Course – Part 2

You need to take your mental golf skills out with you onto the course and use them “on the spot”, so to speak. A frequently cited problem with this is that many golfers find that they can visualize their perfect shot from the armchair, but cannot seem to “see it” when standing over the ball. If this happens to you, ask yourself the question “what’s stopping you from seeing it now?” Because if you can see the shot when at home but not on the course, there is nothing wrong with your visualization skills. Something else is getting in the way.
Maybe it’s the fact you’re not relaxed, you’re feeling a bit tense and so can’t seem to access the more creative part of your mind. If so, ask yourself “Why am I tense?” Maybe the answer is because you don’t want to make a fool of yourself, or because you don’t think you can hit that shot, and so on. Keep asking yourself “Why?” until you get to the root of the problem. Why are you scared of making a fool of yourself? And so on.
Awareness precedes choice which precedes change. You have to know the cause to change the effect. Once again, this is true of everything in life, not just golf. Why do you worry about what people think? Why don’t you think you can hit that shot? Why don’t you see golf as a game and have some fun playing it? Why can’t you laugh at yourself? “Why?” is a wonderful question, which will encourage mental exploration and subsequent discovery, so long as you are honest with yourself and so long as you follow the thread right back to its beginnings.
Think of the phrase “a train of thought” and imagine that you are in the rear carriage, right at the back of the train, and as you ask yourself “Why is that?” and find your own answer you’ll move forwards to the next carriage. Keep working through the carriages of your thought train and eventually you cannot help but reach the engine. And once you reach that engine and become the driver of your train, you can choose your driving direction.
Once you have taken control in this way, you will find that your imagination is truly limitless. You will be able to imagine exquisite golf shots, not only in your armchair, but when you are standing over the ball in a tight spot when you’re in the lead on the 18th.
Having a vivid imagination is a priceless skill. Most of us have a vivid imagination that comes to us naturally when we’re afraid of the outcome – then we can create internal movies that run like a horror story. All you need to do is to tap into this natural ability to visualize and choose to imagine what you want to happen instead of what you don’t. And remember whatever you imagine you’re likely to create, so make sure you choose to imagine great shots with great outcomes. In this way you’ll walk down the fairway with your head held high and a spring in your step.

Hypnosis in Golf – Part 1

Golfers of all standards are recognizing that hypnosis does work. There is more to it than the stereotypical stage hypnotist who wears flowing robes, has a goatee and makes usually sensible people cluck like chickens, or do rather more embarrassing deeds whilst under his “spell”.
A lot of people are afraid of hypnosis, but this is usually due to lack of knowledge. They’ve seen a stage show and think “I’m not going there” or “you couldn’t do that to me”. There is a natural fear of losing control, and a secondary fear that maybe you can’t be hypnotized – that it takes a certain type of person to be hypnotized. Everyone can be hypnotized, so long as you want to be. You pass through hypnosis every time you go to sleep and every time you wake up – it’s the dreamlike state between wake and sleep. When you drive home in your car, and ask yourself when you get there “did I check the traffic lights?” you’ve been in a trance – a state of hypnosis. When you stare through the TV and don’t hear your partner speaking, that again demonstrates trance; it is hypnosis.
Hypnosis is natural, normal, and powerful. Think how useful it could be to block out everything except what’s in your spotlight of thought, AT WILL?… Not just when you’re staring through the TV. Wouldn’t that be helpful when you’re teeing off on the 1st or putting for eagle on the 18th?
Hypnosis is a state of relaxation at one with a state of heightened awareness. You’re not asleep, you’re not knocked out and you cannot be made to do something you don’t want to do. You can hear and you can think. Again, wouldn’t it be helpful to be able to have a relaxed awareness on the golf course? To be able to remain calm inside, but totally aware of what is important at the same time, AND be able to block out unnecessary thoughts and distractions? Just one look at Tiger’s facial expressions and you know how he’s feeling and focusing when he is playing golf.
It seems to be that human nature is that if we’re not achieving the results we desire we must be doing something wrong. We look for something that needs to be fixed. In golf this usually means a fine dissection of our grip, stance, alignment, swing path and so on; followed by a rework of the swing (which may take all year to groove). Very few people think that their swing is basically alright, but they need to focus more clearly, relax more, or begin to think straight.
Returning to the “my swing needs to be fixed” culture, ask yourself “why is this the case?” Because most golfers hit several beautiful shots and a few that weren’t as beautiful – and each time it was the same person who swung the club. How can your golf swing need fixing when that swing hits both beautiful and less than beautiful shots? Ask yourself as well whether you can remember a day when you started on the 1st and hit some really nice shots and you felt yourself thinking “Oh, it’s going well today”?…and your confidence grew, and somehow everything came together and you had a great round of golf? Did your swing need fixing then? Is it your swing or your mind that makes the difference in golf?

Golf Exercises For A Fantastic Game

In order to succeed in golf you must first refine the tools you use to play the game. This means buying the best possible clubs you can afford to buy, and getting your body into golf playing shape. The more attention you pay to the different areas of your body, the better results you will get on the golf course. In order to increase the effectiveness of your driving, you need to understand what parts of the body are important to driving and work on those parts to improve power and distance.
Control for your drives comes from your shoulders and upper arms. These areas are the part of your upper body that you use to keep the shaft of your driver straight, and produce the desired follow-through. To develop these muscles properly you should do a series of arm extensions with heavy weights in each hand. Find a weight that you can lift with one arm, and from a seated position reach down and hold on to a weight in each hand. Simultaneously, and slowly, bring your arms straight up until they are parallel with your shoulders. Hold them there for the count of three, and then slowly bring them back down. Repeat this as often as you can.
They say that the best grip in golf is a soft grip, and while this is very true it still takes strong hands to maintain a soft but effective grip. Ideally you would like to get spring-loaded hand grip exercisers that are very common and inexpensive. Use them whenever you have spare time, and always remember to use them equally on both hands. You may still be left-handed or right-handed, but you will need strength in both hands to properly grip the golf club.
One of the more common golfing related injuries is a pulled hamstring. A loose and warmed-up hamstring allows for maximum flexibility, and this can add distance to your drive. Work with a professional trainer or physical therapist to develop a series of exercises to help you stretch your hamstring, and then do them on a regular basis. One of the easier hamstring exercises is to lie flat on your back, and then extend your leg straight up. That is difficult enough if you have not regularly exercises your hamstring before, but to add to it you should slowly pull your leg back towards your chest and hold it in position for a count of five. If this is too difficult to do with your arms, then use a belt to pull your leg towards you. Do this exercise slowly and gradually, and remember to do it every day.
People usually neglect the lower back until it gives out on them in a painful and frustrating way. Strengthening your lower back will make your golf stance easier to maintain, and it will bring power to your swing. Lie on the floor face down with your hands extended out from your shoulders a flat on the floor. This exercise will seem like a push-up, but the difference is that you are only pushing up your upper body. Extend your arms and then hold yourself in that position for a count of five. Slowly exhale and lower your upper body and then repeat as many times as you can. Another effective back strengthening exercise is to stand straight up, extend your arms out in front of you, and then slowly squat down as though you were going to sit in a chair. Once you have reached the seated position, slowly stand back up. Do these in sets of ten for as much as you can. Never overdo it, and always stop exercising when you feel tired or when you start to feel discomfort.

How To Succeed In The Golf Short Game And Tips To Get Even Better

Are You Using The Wrong Club?
Using the wrong club in one of the biggest mistakes golfers can make on the golf course. You can improve your golf short game, lower your score and have a lot more enjoyment on the golf course if you can keep consistent with your choice of club that you feel most comfortable with around the greens.
For example, if you feel more comfortable using an 8 iron whenever you are 50 metres out, then use it. Many golfers read magazines, articles or videos that have professionals recommending a certain club and feel they have to do the same as them. What works for some golfers doesn’t always work for others. Stick to what works, for you and feels most comfortable.
Here’s a good example. Whenever Tiger Woods is faced with a shot from anywhere around the green he always uses his 60 degree lob wedge. He doesn’t mix and match his wedges. He sticks to what works for him. It’s what he has practiced with and therefore feels most comfortable with. What he knows is that he can use his 60 degree wedge to hit a flop shot where the ball only goes say 10 metres, and he can also use the same wedge to hit a shot that goes as far as 30 metres just by making a few minor adjustments to his technique. Why? Because this is the golf club that he feels most comfortable with to do the job.
Success in the golf short game has as much to do with your confidence as it does with your comfort levels using certain techniques and shot variety. In due course you will find a ‘go to club’ that works for you every time you are faced with a certain shot. When you are practicing, focus around getting as sharp and precise as possible with your favourite club around the greens. This will pay off big time when you are faced with a similar shot on the golf course.
Stop Over-Analyzing Everything On The Golf Course
Golf much like a lot of sports can often lose its enjoyment for the average golfer because of the constant need to dissect and over complicate on what is basically a simple game. What you want golf to be is enjoyable, confidence building and makes you feel you are in control. What this all means is just letting the game flow and taking it as it comes and not getting too carried away with the results. Let the game come to you and just let it happen.
Most golfers have had a few lessons with a professional, picked up a few tips from a magazine or maybe even learnt something from watching the best players on your television. What you need to do is trust what you have learnt and allow your subconscious to show you the way. Swing the golf club without fear and you’ll be surprised how simple the game of golf can be … in particular your golf short game will improve out of sight.
Grow your confidence by developing a consistent, solid golf swing. The rest of the way the game of game is a matter of hitting the ball towards the green, hitting it again until it’s in the back of the cup.
It may seem way too simple, obviously you need to practice and have the right preparation, but if you spend too much time over analyzing every second of your round you are going to become increasingly frustrated and eventually give up all together. Golf is a great game to be enjoyed. Focus your energy on having a fun round of golf and concentrate only for those few seconds when you are hitting a golf shot.

Improving Your Golf Game

Improve your golf game right now you say? I say, absolutely! Don’t waste another dime on new golf equipment: taking one more lesson or hitting one more ball at the range, until you finish reading this article.
You see it’s not what you think that’s not allowing you to improve your golf game.
It’s something very simple and easy to remedy. It’s YOU! How your body moves throughout your golf swing.
Let me ask you, do you feel nice and loose, relaxed and fluid when you swing a club on the golf course? Do you feel like your backswing is what it should be? How about your distance off the tee? Are you happy with it?

Thinking of having a great round on the golf course can be a lot of mental work. The most important part of having a great round on the golf course begins with a few thoughts. Question is where and how many?
Preparing your mind for a great golf game can be quite time consuming and unhealthy, depending on where you start your mental game. Triggering your thoughts for a great game of golf should not be in the car on the way to the golf course. If you’re approaching a curve ahead of you going downhill on a slippery roadway, and you see a sharp curve ahead of you. Do you start thinking on how you are going to fly the trap on the first hole? Trying to dream up a great game of golf in a coffee shop can have your lips seared with hot coffee as well. Thinking of sinking that long 30-foot putt on the first hole, while having dinner out with your wife or girlfriend, could have that same coffee all over your lap.

For some of us trying to play a golf hole in our mind is our way of preparing ourselves for the game to come. Thoughts on visualizing how you plan on conquering the fifth, or seventh golf hole that you always seem to have trouble with, could have you playing it over and over again in your mind, until you get it right. I think it gives us the self-satisfaction before we approach the notorious golf hole, that in our mind we have conquered the golf hole the night before. Have you ever lost sleep the night before trying to conjure up a great round of golf for the next day?
The thoughts of having a great round of golf, and a good game plan, should start on the first tee box, looking down the fairway and visualizing the shot at hand. If you start thinking of anything other than where you want the ball to land on your shot at hand. You will find yourself scratching your head, and thinking of where you went wrong.
Thoughts on a good game plan should be on your immediate task at hand. Most of us have been told to play one golf shot at a time. I think the same would apply on playing one golf hole at a time, taking one curve on the roadway ahead of you at a time, and taking one sip of coffee at a time, and leaving your golf game plan thoughts at home when you go out for dinner. Do not attempt to take your golf game plan and wife, or lady friend out at the same time.
