Mind your Language When Playing Golf! – PART 1 Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

How many times have you heard a particular tune and found yourself humming it the next day? Do you remember how at school you learnt lots of things by hearing or seeing them and then repeating them? How did you learn to walk? Did you see someone else walking and then copy them? If you set out to learn a second language now, today, would you see the words and try to say them, hear the phrases and try to imitate them? How did you learn to play golf? Why do you speak in the accent that you do?

We learn through our senses. We take in information via our senses and then our minds compute that information and make sense of it all. We are, all of us, inherently “suggestible”. We learn through mimicking, copying and suggestion. Things seem to “rub off” onto us.

The ability we human beings have to learn in this way is amazing; it is fantastic…so long as we are mimicking, copying and responding to the right suggestions. If we hear something a few times, whether we like it or not, we will tend to find ourselves repeating it; hence sometimes hearing an “annoying” tune in your head. If we do something several times we tend to keep doing that thing, whether we really consciously want to or not; it becomes a habit, smoking, for example, or buying a snickers bar every time you fill up with gas.

Our minds work by generalizing patterns of thought and behavior over context. For example, as a child you learned to recognize a glass as a glass. And then every time you see any type of glass it is recognizable to you as a glass – it has been generalized in your mind over context. Where the generalization is accurate, this ability we have is supremely beneficial; when it is flawed, it can have an extremely debilitating effect…

How many times have you heard yourself say “I can’t putt”, “I can’t get off the tee”, or some variation of this theme? Is this generalization accurate? The reality of the situation is that on this particular putt, or this particular tee shot, you used your club to hit the ball and the ball went wherever it went. Full stop! That is what happened; nothing more, nothing less. Why should that mean that you CANT putt (ever) or get off the tee (ever)?

The problem here is that you aren’t looking at the reality of the situation, you aren’t focusing on the present, you have switched your awareness into a “generalization” mode, and you are creating a self-fulfilling prophesy. You end up not being able to putt or get off the tee because this is what you have suggested to yourself. In the words of Henry Ford “If you think you can you can; and if you think you can’t you’re right”.

If someone else was as critical about your golf as you are, how would you react? If your “mates” stood there saying “you can’t putt” would you just stand by and take it? Or would you get a bit defensive and feel that the comment was “unfair” or “unnecessary” to say the very least? It pays to remember that we humans respond to suggestions, be it consciously or subconsciously, and that we can choose to accept or to reject those suggestions. Would you be as critical about your playing partner’s swing as you are about your own? Why be so hard on yourself? Why be so very negative and destructive? Why do you actually consciously choose to do something which will destroy your golf game? You know that you are telling yourself you can’t do it, so why not change the language you use?

Why not change the suggestions which you are giving to yourself? You can learn how to change your habitual internal language with the help of hypnosis downloads. Why do you think the professionals use golf hypnosis? They use golf hypnosis because it works; hypnosis downloads can be used to get you to focus, to stay in the now, to see what you really want to see. You can use golf hypnosis downloads to stop generalizing and to enjoy your golf a whole lot more than before.

Have You Ever Noticed The Differences In Golf Balls Monday, January 11th, 2010

Finding the right ball for you is about spin, feel, distance, and price.

Just like golf clubs, golf balls must fit the golfer, and as with clubs, you must match the golf ball that best complements your specific swing and style of play.

Golf balls, although not inexpensive, are affordable enough to allow a degree of experimentation. You should try different brands and types of balls before settling on one.

Distance and Spin Today’s golf ball is about getting the 2 basic factors of distance and spin correct.

The trajectory (launch angle), provides the distance, and the spin provides better control of the golf ball.

Launch or trajectory angle is determined firstly by the driver, and then next by the golf ball.

If you already drive the ball long and accurate, perhaps the spin and feel of the ball around the green is more important.

Some top golfers will fit the golf ball, from the spin and feel of a ball around the green, back to the driver. Others will go from distance with a driver down to the wedge.

There are tracking devices used by professionals and ball manufacturers that track the flight and launch angle of the ball. The higher the COR of a ball , the higher the velocity this gives, but with a much lower feel to the ball

So what should you be looking for to get more distance through a better launch angle?

If you have, a low hand speed, then a ball that has high spin would give more optimum lift, hence more distance.

Conversely, a. higher hand speed would be better with a low spin.

Of course a downside to the higher spin ball, is that if you hit it incorrectly, then you will also put on the ball more side spin and the ball could go further off to the right or left of centre!

Feel It is the core that determines the compression and the hardness or softness of the ball. The outer cover will determine the durability and spin.

The old balata balls gave lots of spin and a good feel, but were less good for ball flight, or durability.

The Top-Flite Strata golf ball, introduced in the mid-1990’s, produced the first 3 piece ball.. It merged a high-spinning, soft-feeling Tour Balata type of ball, with the low-spinning, long-flying, and durable Pinnacle or distance ball.

This remarkable three-piece ball, was, indeed, two balls in one: It was a long-flying/low-spinning distance ball off the tee, and a high-spinning control ball off the irons.

They achieved this by adding a soft polyurethane cover on what was virtually a Top-Flite distance ball, and then adding a thin middle or mantle layer that encased the ball’s already large and solid rubber core.

A few years later, balls such as Titleist’s ProVI, Maxfli’s M3 Tour, Callaway’s Rule 35, Nike’s TA2 (both the Long and Spin models), and others, including new balls from Strata, improved on Strata’s original breakthrough, by improving the durability of their urethane outer covers and making them thinner and firmer for added distance.

At the same time, advances in rubber systems allowed ball makers to design cores that were more energetic or “faster,” for even more distance on shots hit with the longer clubs, while maintaining a nice soft feel.

Tour balls today, can provide good distance, durability and spin, but at a price.

What is best for you? If you have a high hand speed, then a higher compression ball, like a ‘DT’ ball, maybe better. With a slower hand speed, a lower compression ball like the ‘Maxfli noodle’ would probably suit. (I am not a representative of either golf ball manufacturer).

The manufacturer, today, can make a ball with a large rubber centre that feels soft like the low-compression balls of years past, but flies far with a lot of initial ball speed like the old high-compression balls.

Therefore, it is wise now to read what it says on the box, and try them out. You will be amazed at how different balls react.

Price Tour golf balls are still the best, but are a high price to pay.

Perhaps a happy medium is the mid-price range, which will provide good spin or distance characteristics, without having to pay through the nose. Plus if you lose those golf balls, then maybe you won’t need to spend as long looking for them.

Be honest with yourself, what is the ideal for you, is it distance or feel, or a happy medium all round.

Good luck in your ball fitting.

The Do’s and Don’ts in Your Golf Mind – Part 1 Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Have you ever wondered why sometimes the more you don’t want something to happen the more likely it is that it does happen? That’s kind of a strange co-incidence don’t you think? Let’s examine what happens when you try to not do something…

Try as hard as you can right now to NOT think about a giraffe.

What are you thinking about? It’s almost certain to be a giraffe! Now ask yourself did you see the word “giraffe” or did you see it’s rather long neck?

So what does this tell us about how our minds work? Firstly, in order to comprehend what it is we are trying not to think about we have to focus on what that thing is. Secondly, we tend to picture it rather than think about the letters of the word; an image of it comes into your mind’s eye. And this makes sense if you think about how you learnt as a child; You would have a picture book with the words next to the picture, and that’s how you would learn that that particular word represented that particular picture. The picture has more impact – the picture comes first.

What we can learn from this is that where there is a conflict between your will power and your imagination, your imagination wins. Hence in several previous article posts I focused upon the power of visualization in creating a great putting routine, and more particularly, the power of using visualization as a practice routine which you can execute at any time when you are unable to get out and play golf.

If you haven’t quite appreciated as yet the extreme power of this mental skill, think of the times that you have stood on the tee thinking “don’t go in the bunker” and hey, presto – amazingly that’s exactly where the ball ended up. Your mind is EXQUISITELY TALENTED. Unless you are a pretty low handicap player, for most of us to aim the ball into a bunker that’s 180 yards away and 2 yards in width, we would probably have to have a few attempts before succeeding; and yet, just by THINKING “don’t go in there”, it does. Wow! Isn’t that amazing?

Once again, what can we learn from this? As you think “Don’t” your mind has to comprehend “don’t what?” and will PICTURE whatever the object it. And a “picture is worth a thousand words” to quote a well-known, and insightful, phrase. What we golfers need to do is simply to use this knowledge to our advantage. We can choose to PICTURE exactly where we want the golf ball to go. You can picture the exact line that you want the ball to travel along, picture the trajectory, picture the ball landing and rolling and coming to a stop. Your mind understands and responds to pictures automatically, instinctively and EASILY.

Sometime soon, why not get out to the chipping area with a friend? Take it in turns to ask your friend where they are going to land the ball, and put a tee there to mark the precise spot. Then ask them how high the ball will travel; hold your arm out to indicate the exact height. This is a quick way of assisting someone to visualize their shot. Then move away and allow them to execute the shot they have pictured. It’s amazing how your visualization skills will improve as you do this, and in this way you are clearly telling the golf ball what to do – you are chipping with clear intent. The result, quite logically, is that the golf ball is far more likely to go where you want it to.

Once you have done this, you can go home, put your feet up, get nice and cozy and simply picture the process all over again. You can have a lovely relax on the sofa, simply visualizing all those fantastic chips, over and over and over again, thereby strengthening those neural pathways in your brain, creating an expectation that those great chips will come off as you want them to.

Why not spend some time focusing upon your mind instead of the mechanics of golf? You can learn how to really visualize your shots with the help of hypnosis downloads. Why do you think the professionals use golf hypnosis? They use golf hypnosis because it works; hypnosis downloads can be used to get you to focus, to stay in the now, to visualize a great shot and to see what you really want to see thereby making it happen. And that’s what you want; you want to make it happen when you are out there on the course.

Golf on a Budget Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

I know what you’re thinking – golf on a budget! Can there be such a thing? Well, it is possible, if you take a balanced, objective look at the strategies used in marketing golf products.

Case in point – I just interviewed a local golf shop owner today. We were talking about the new golf balls, and he was telling me that representatives from different companies send him golf balls to use, hoping that he’ll recommend them to his customers.

Well, he said he’s tried just about everything, and in his opinion, they all play about the same now. Picking up a box of 12 Titleist balls, he said, “This one is probably the best.” They cost $24.99 for the dozen. Then he laughed and picked up another box. “But this one is our best seller.”

The box was priced $44.99 for the dozen. I looked surprised. He shook his head and said, “It’s all hype. People think that if the balls cost double, they’re bound to play better.”

Now we have the new hybrid ironwoods. Are they really going to change your game that much? Or is it all a part of the marketing pitch?

I heard one marketer say that since the golf market was so saturated, he priced his clubs at three times the price of anyone else’s. And he sold hundreds of thousands of dollars worth. The clubs weren’t any more expensive to make than other clubs. It was just a “market test”. And folks bought like crazy.

Since no two people play golf the same – and everyone has an individual physique and swing – a product that adds distance for one player may not help another player at all.

Think about something you do very well that requires a piece of equipment. You’re the expert in this area. Should everyone who attempts your job then buy the exact same equipment as you have? Will that mean they’ll be able to do the job better or as well as you?

Food for thought, isn’t it? I enjoy gardening, and have a lovely flower garden. But I only have one or two garden tools that are considered the best. The other things I use because that’s what I’ve always used.

So just because one golf pro buys one kind of ball or club doesn’t mean that it’s the best for you.

The sales pitches that swear you’re going to add 30 yards and never hit another slice entice us to shell out the big bucks. But if you’re careful and have a healthy dose of skepticism, you’ll save both time and money in the long run.

Remember, in the golf world, just because a product is more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily any better.

Improving Your Golf Bunker Shot Tuesday, July 7th, 2009
Bunker Shot

Golfing is one of those sports that everyone should get involved in. It is fun and it is not too strenuous. That makes it perfect for people of all ages from the very young to the very old. Not many other sports can boast the huge age range of people who play golf. If there is one thing they all have in common it is the want to improve their swing. Everyone wants to score that hole in one and they all want to improve their golf bunker shot too. It is only natural.

There are several ways that you can work to improve your bunker shots and most of them are pretty basic. You don’t need to grow another arm or buy some super expensive club to help you out, it is all about technique and learning from those who have been there before you. I was not a natural golfer. It took me a long time to get where I am today. For example I was one of those people, like so many others, who was always slicing the ball. No matter how hard I tried I only seemed to be getting worse, it was terrible. I practiced and I practiced and still I couldn’t seem to improve my swing. Then I got smart and asked someone for help and the funny thing is that the answers they gave me were easy and simple. In no time I has solved the problem and that was that. So I have to commend you for even getting to this article because not everyone is smart enough to be willing to look for help when they need it. Now that you are here you can learn something!

But I digress, one bunker can be very different from the next – heck, even the same bunker can be different from day to day. It is all about the weather conditions. If it has been cold and wet lately then you could find that the bunker is full of wet sand and soil and this will mean you have to take a different approach to your bunker shot. So always keep that in mind when it comes time to hit the golf ball. Look around you and feel the ground with your feet to see how squishy or soggy it happens to be and include this info in your shot.

In the case of the ideal bunker shot out of dry normal sand you want to have the clubface a little more open than usual. This will allow you to get a good shot in that will get you out of the sand. In the case of wet or shallow sand then you want to take a slightly different approach. Try having the club face a little more square in this instance and see how that works for you. It should make all of the difference. In wet and shallow sand it is also a good idea to have a little less violent of a backswing. By making this backswing shorter you will have more control over the ball and your ability to maneuver it out of the bunker.

Always remember that if you make the mistake of closing the face of the club you will end up digging into the sand instead of getting out of it. This will lead to a whole new set of problems, so keep it open and you will find your score improving drastically the next time that you play golf. Your golf bunker shot will go from being so-so to impeccable.
