How to Improve Your Mental Golf Approach Between Shots with Golf Psychology Saturday, February 6th, 2010

If I were to ask you what you do between shots during a round of golf, you’d probably think I was missing the point. After all, golf psychology and teaching should be all about helping you to hit better shots and putts during a round of golf or in practice, shouldn’t it? This applies whether you’re working with a teaching pro helping you with your golf swing or with a golf psychologist helping to improve your mental approach to golf.

So what do you actually do in the time between assessing and hitting your shots and putts? It really should take a lot less than a minute on average to size up a shot, decide on how to play it, set up to the ball and hit it. I seem to recall from somewhere that the US PGA allows 45 seconds for all this per shot and very few people take that long over a short putt. So all that should add up to a maximum of 54 minutes actually playing golf to go round in 72 strokes and 72 minutes to go round in 90 strokes. If you take just 4 hours to play a round then you’re not actually playing for approximately 3 hours in every 18 holes.

What many people do in this spare 3 hours in every round is to get down on themselves mentally. Just watch how many golfers trudge between shots with their heads down and seemingly just staring at the ground a few feet ahead. Many of them are talking to themselves and often what they’re saying is not usually fit for publication. Thankfully, they normally keep the voice inside their heads, but I’m sure you’ve played the odd round with a playing partner who berates himself loudly during the course of a round – I know I’ve done that in the, hopefully distant, past and I’m not proud of it.

So what’s wrong with keeping your head down between shots? Well just watch how people typically stand when life is on the up. Yes, they stand erect with their head held high. And when they are feeling down, their heads tend to be down. Psychological research also demonstrates that this works the other way too, so if you walk between shots with your head down and your shoulders a bit slumped, you’ll automatically feel down. In the same way, you will feel like things are looking up if you’re walking erect with your head raised high.

Have you ever noticed how depressed people seem to be in many nursing homes and how many of them walk around in a bent over posture? Well I met a husband and wife recently, both doctors, who are incorporating NLP concepts into posture management. They’ve found that they can improve the posture and, more importantly, increase the level of happiness and optimism of patients in nursing homes by simply replacing the lounge chairs with ones that encourage a more upright sitting posture and hanging televisions from the ceilings rather than sitting them on the floor. Those simple changes lead to wholesale improvements in people’s posture, health and happiness.

Next time you play golf; try walking between shots with your back straight and your head held high. You could even use golf hypnosis to help you to remember not to forget to do it when you play. Greenside Golf Bunkers Free Tips And Advice to better Shots Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Before playing your shot, move to the back outside of the bunker and take a few practice swings as if you were in the bunker.
Access your line of target, stand with your feet apart, make sure to have your stance and club face open

Most greenside bunkers you will find have greater banks than fairway bunkers have, so you will require a good height to your shot and a very short distance.
Remember with a bunker shot one can not ground the club in the sand when addressing the ball, including not touching the sand before you play your stroke. If you do either you will be penalised two strokes in stroke play or in match play the penalty is loss of a hole.

Have the golf ball so it is back in your stance, but not too far back. Always remember the more of a back swing you adopt the greater the distance you will have.

Firm both your feet in the sand to create a solid footing, as you rotate your feet creating a solid footing you will get a feel as to how loose the sand is, and also a guide as how much sand there is.
Make sure never to change your posture. How hard a player should hit down into the sand it all depends on the texture and depth of the sand.

When striking the ball hit the sand approximately four inches before the golf ball. Most importantly make sure to follow through with your shot, this is vital, if you fail to do so your ball will most likely fail to clear the bunker lip. Don’t apply brute force as an attempt to blast the ball out will only cause all kinds of problems, Try and imagine the club head travelling on a U-shape into and through impact
By hitting the sand approx the four inches before the golf ball and making sure to follow through, the club should slide under the ball and should therefore have a lot of spin in the ball preventing the ball from rolling too far.

Finally always remember to smooth out the foot marks and any other marks with the rake provided.
Failure to repair a bunker is as with any damage to the golf course is unforgivable. If there is no rake available try and use your club to smooth out the marks as best as possible.

The Thumb Theory

Maintaining a correct grip on the club during the back swing is vital. It’s not just the initial grip on the club that’s important; keeping your thumb pointing towards the heavens at the half way mark of the swing is essential. Imagine this in your mind before playing the shot and memorize it. As the club comes back at the midway point of the swing, the thumb, which initially points towards the ground, should be pointing towards the sky before you come down and follow through with the swing.

Easy Does It!

Never be in a rush when playing your shot. Improving your golf swing is all about controlling the movement of the club. Sure you can hit the ball with plenty of power but this doesn’t mean you need to swing as hard and fast as you can. Getting the rhythm right takes a little practice and an effective method for keeping this rhythm in check is to pause slightly at the completion of the upswing before completing the downswing motion. Many golfers will actually do a short count in their minds for no more than a second. This method has the effect of tempering the urge to swing to quickly.

Completing a smooth swing comes naturally to some golfers but for most of us, practicing is the only way we can get this part of the game right. It looked ungainly but it got the desired result I was after!

Steel shafts are strong, durable, and offer control; however, you must be strong in order to produce the same distance that graphite does. Overall, stronger players should use steel shafts if control isn’t quite up to par. Graphite shafts are versatile but expensive. They are less durable and offer less control, but require less strength.

Flex, as the name implies, is the flexibility of the shaft. There are five basic levels of flex in golf: L for Ladies, A for Seniors, Regular, Stiff, and Extra Stiff. Flexible shafts provide more power, which is a great aspect for beginning players as well as those with weaker swings. However, as shafts become less and less flexible, there is more control available. This is why stronger players should drift towards the Stiff and Extra Stiff flex levels; that is, if you have a 90-110 MPH swing, try out the stiffer two levels. Average swings are around 75-90 MPH, and players with those swings should stick with the regular level for now.
3.The weight and length – Obviously, the basic characteristics of weight and length should be considered. Basically, lighter clubs give faster swing speeds and farther hits. This translates into a simple concept: Players with stronger swings choose heavier clubs for more control. Lighter drivers work better for those without stronger swings.

The length of the driver is another decision in the balance between control and distance. Drivers with a length of 43 to 44 inches are considered traditional. Drivers 45 to 46 inches long can give a slightly longer distance. Any longer than 46 inches poses the opportunity to have a greatly increased potential for distance as well as a greatly decreased range of control.

Another key to making consistent putts is to strike the ball from the sweet spot on your putter. Having trouble finding the sweet spot? Just hold the club vertically in between your thumb and index finger. Make sure you are holding the putter directly in front of your eyes.

Now tap on the putter clubface with something small and firm, like a pen or a golf tee. Every time you hit the clubface and the putter head twists, this is not the sweet spot. Continue hitting the putter face until it moves straight back. This is the sweet spot. Target it every time. If this seems too complex then the good news is most new putters today are designed with a painted on target/sweet spot that you can’t miss. All that is required or needed is three woods, 3-9 irons
a pw and putter for a basic golf club set.certain additional,more specific clubs can be added to suit your abilities as your game improves.

Remeber the only rule is you can not have more than 14 clubs in your bag at a time.

First no what your handicap is and than follow these genral guidelines. Know your level of playing
low, mid, high handicap golfer to determine your basic set

The low-handicap golfer
A low-handicap player has a single-digit handicap, meaning he or she generally scores less than 10 strokes
over par, or an 82 or less on a par-72 course.

Woods
The low-handicap player should carry a driver and at least 1 fairway wood, most likely the 3-wood.

your irons,
The three or four-iron is a difficult club to hit but can be very useful if it can be controlled by the low handicap golfer.

Wedges
A minimum of 3 wedges–sand wedge, pitching wedge and either a lob wedge or approach wedge–in their bags, with
a maximum 4-degree difference between each one.

Are you a mid-handicap golfer?
this is a golfer that plays at about 1 over par on average for each hole.

Woods
The driver and a 3-wood and 5-wood,consider adding a 7-
wood. These fairway woods give much better control and
consistency than the harder to hit long irons.

Irons
Usually only a 3 through 9 are recommended, since the 2-iron is very difficult to hit consistently.

Wedges
Three different wedges are recommended
pitching wedge, sandwedge, and either a lob wedge or approach wedge.

High-handicap golfer is either a new golfer or one who has not had the time to play much golf.The high-handicapper usually shoots close to 100 or over.

Woods
You may not even want to have a driver in your bag. Instead, go with the 3-wood as your off-the-tee wood and
add the easier-to-hit 7- and 9-wood.

Irons
3 hybrid to replace your long irons 3,4. Usually only a 5 through 9 are recommended, since the 2-4 iron is very difficult to hit for this level.

Wedges
A pitching wedge, sand wegde are good to have at this level.

Ever wonder how the players on T.V. hit those perfect shots around the green that end up stopping right beside the hole?

It’s a really simple answer. They have the wedges that are fitted to their individual games. How do they find those wedges? Well let’s take a look. As you know golf wedges have come a really long way in the last couple years and the smarter players are realizing the benefits of these advancements.

If you are still one of those players who is still only carrying one wedge in your golf bag you are basically throwing away strokes to your golfing buddies or other competitors. You have to add the benefits of a better wedge game to your arsenal to succeed and lower your scores. The best thing is that it’s simple to do.

There are four basic wedges that are available to the game of golf today. These wedges all have a particular place in your bag in terms of the shots you can hit with them. Since 70% of the scoring is done in golf from inside 100 yards it is essential to have these four wedges in your bag.

These wedges are:

The Pitching Wedge – This wedge is included in your set and is probably the “one” wedge that every player has. It is usually the club that is hit form about 100 to 125 yards form the pin. The loft on these clubs are somewhere between 46 and 50 degrees depending on the manufacturer. This will be the longest wedge in terms of distance in your bag.

The Gap Wedge – This wedge is typically the club that is left out of the so called “mix” because of its late introduction to the wedge game. This club is used to fill the gap between the pitching and sand wedges and can carry lofts between 50 and 54 degrees. These clubs are sold individually at your local retailer.

The Sand Wedge – Don’t be fooled by the name of this club into thinking it’s only for use from the sand. Its loft is somewhere between 55 and 59 degrees and provides a great amount of spin or stopping power. It can be purchased on its own or sometimes come with your set. You usually hit this club form 90 yards into the pin including the sand traps.

The Lob Wedge – These clubs must be purchase separately from your local retailer. They are used for shorter high shots around the green that you would like to stop quickly. They generally have a loft of 60 to 64 degrees and are a lot of fun to hit.

As a general rule of thumb the average player should try to space the loft of the different wedges to 4 degrees. What that means is there should be 4 degrees difference from pitching wedge to gap wedge, 4 degrees form gap wedge to sand wedge , and 4 degrees form sand wedge to lob wedge.

There are a number of other variables that we can get into to help you select the best wedges for your game but these should give you a great starting point.

How important is the grip to your success in the game? The grip is the fundamental connection between you and your golf ball. In the grip, your hands are close together and apply even pressure with the left thumb providing additional support and control of the club from underneath the grip.

Taking Aim
When setting up your swing, align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel and slightly left of the target. When your body follows rotation through your center, the stroke will send your shot in the direction that is perpendicular to your alignment. To check your alignment, stay in golf stance, and rotate your chin towards the target. A smooth, tension-free swing improves the swing motion. If you watch professional golfers, you will notice that at the top of the swing, their arms are slightly bent, and there is an intentional awareness of being relaxed throughout the swing.

Keep Your Eye on the Ball
As tempting as it may be to look away from your ball, it is critical to your alignment to make eye contact until it is launched. It is very tempting to look towards your target once the down swing is almost complete, but this will change your swing so stay with the ball until it is on its way to the target.

The Athletic Warm-Up
Before any event, a good athlete warms up for competition. The same should be true of golf. Arrive a few minutes early before a game, hit a few shots with your range of clubs taking note of your swing, practice a few chip shots, and finally get a feel for the greens with several putts of different distances. Understanding the greens will help you later when making critical decisions.

Improving Your Distance
What happens to improve your distance happens prior to hitting your shot. It’s all in the swing. Keep a light grip on your club as you coil, keep your left foot on the ground during the backswing, and remain relaxed. Let your arms and shoulders do the work with a fully-extended, wide range of motion. Gradually increase club speed on the down stroke, and swing through the golf ball.

Like any sports, golf entails some fundamental instructions on rules, method, customs, and equipment.

These golf instructions, aside from practices, are important in order to become an expert golfer. But even if you have no desire to become an expert golfer you can shave many strokes off your golf game with proper instruction.

Hence, in the United States, any golfer can gain the same knowledge that most professional golfers have obtained by enrolling in golf schools or training centers that are duly licensed by the U.S. Golf Teacher’s Federation or the Professional Golfers Association.

For those who would like to know more about golf instructions, here is a list of some facts that they can use in gaining more information about golf and golf instructions:

1. Golf Instructions started in the “medieval era”. As early as the 1350’s, golf instructions had already dominated the society. Back then, golfers were already incorporating the basic concept of golf instructions by letting each group of golfers to strike the next unbroken shot.

Through golf instructions, every golfer wannabe is able to learn the different traditional shots like fairway shots, chipping, approaches, putting, sand-shots, and driving. For higher level of golf instructions, players are taught with methods that are more intricate like controlling the loft, trouble shots, and controlling the shape of the shot. Indeed, there are no better ways to learn golf than through golf instructions. Everything’s already included and taught in golf instructions. Golf instuctors need to be patient, knowledgeable and most important, able to work with different personalities with different temperament and physical make up. If you aren’t happy with your instructor, fire him! Move on and make them work for you as golf is a game to be enjoyed.
