The popularity of golf has increased tremendously over
the past forty five years, giving us champions like
Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods, and
world-renowned courses like Pinehurst, Augusta
National and the Blue Monster at Doral.
Why has golf become so popular? It’s the opportunity
to be outside, to get a good whole body workout,
network with friends or business colleagues at a
leisurely pace, and to play a game that you can never
perfect.
Your scorecard, over time, shows your improvement,
which keeps you playing again and again.
Here is a very basic lesson in golf for the person who
has no clue about the game.
Golf is played on an eighteen-hole course; each hole
has its “par”, which is the number of tee shots
(drives), fairway shots, chips (short hits as you
approach the green), and putts.
The par number is based on the length and difficulty
of the hole. Pars range from 3 to 6. If you get the
ball in the hole in five shots on a par five hole, you
“made par.” If it took you six shots, it’s called a
bogie, if you made it in four, it’s a birdie.
There are usually “hazards” of some sort on all the
holes. Bodies of water, sand traps, and trees are
strategically placed to make the hole more
challenging. Beginner golfers should seek to find
courses to play that are easier to play, with fewer
hazards.
Each player keeps their own score, marking the number
of total number of shots for each hole. At the end,
each person adds their scores-the lowest number is the
winner.
It is important for beginner golfers to not take
themselves too seriously. It takes a long time to get
good at this game; even though the professionals make
it look so easy.
Take a lesson or two at the onset; it will help you
develop a proper swing and help you get off to a good
start.
Remember that it’s just a game. Have fun and look at
the big picture-you’re outside and you’re not at work!

Channel Your First Tee Nerves into Unconscious Golf Resources for Better Golf
Thursday, February 4th, 2010
There’s a danger we treat fear completely as a bad thing in golf psychology. Now I know this goes against a lot of what I’ve been saying, but I’m talking here about the thin end of fear – nervousness. For many people, nervousness is the buzz of competition, whether we’re competing with other people, ourselves or the golf course we happen to be playing.
For many people the buzz is part of the enjoyment. Perhaps that’s what Mark Twain was referring to when he wrote that “Golf is a good walk spoiled” and HRH Princess Anne meant when she said “Golf seems to be an arduous way to go for a walk. I prefer to take the dogs out.”
Personally, I feel that if I’m not nervously shaking when I get near the end of a seriously good scoring round or close game of match play then I might as well give up golf and go and do something else that excites and inspires me. Jack Nicklaus knew that if you didn’t feel nervous at the end of a tournament you’re trying to win then there’s something wrong with you – he thrived on it. It’s said that he stopped winning golf tournaments when he no longer got so nervous in competition. And you don’t have to be winning to get that feeling, just competing hard in some way. If you watched the duel between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson during the last round of the 2009 Masters, you’ll know just what mean.
The important thing to remember is to channel that nervous energy into an enhanced state of focus using self hypnosis with deep breathing is one of the best ways I know for doing just that. Alternatively, you could follow the instructions in my article entitled Balance Your Golf Mind and Body for Better Golf – Focus on your Hara. Now anchor that feeling and add it to your unconscious golfing resources. Now you can access the great feeling, that Jack Nicklaus loves so much, whenever you want it or need it.
Like so many of the things I have learned as a golf psychologist, I do so wish I’d known about all this wonderful NLP and golf hypnosis a long time ago when I got so nervous at Hexham, playing with Tony Jacklin at Brookmans Park and whenever I seemed to be on the first tee anywhere!

Information And Advice On Purchasing Used Golf Equipment
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Golf is a great sport enjoyed by millions of people around the world. It is also one of the world’s most difficult sports, and for people with a tendency to become frustrated when things don’t go how they wanted them to, golf may not be the right sport for you.
If you’ve never played golf before, or played only crazy golf or only played on a small sized pitch and putt course with a seven iron and a putter, a game of golf on a full sized course is a different ball game. Not only do you require more golf clubs, but you require more patience, and also more energy to take you around the full course.
So if you’re going to play on a full sized golf course and don’t have any clubs, what do you do, you can either:
A: Go to your local golf shop, purchase the most expensive clubs you can find and when you find out you can’t play like Tiger Woods with them wish you’d have bought some cheaper ones.
B: Rent some clubs or borrow some from a friend.
C: Buy some reasonably priced used golf equipment from somewhere.
If you have never played golf before and are not sure you’ll like it, it is recommended that you borrow a set of clubs from a trusting friend who will need much reassurance they will come back in one piece. If however you have played golf before and you like the game, you may wish to consider purchasing some used golf equipment.
Simply because you are playing on a full sized golf course, this doesn’t mean you need the full amount of clubs. For beginners, a 3 or 5 woods, a 3 iron, 5 iron, 7 iron, sand wedge and a putter should suffice. As for other equipment a second hand golf club bag with a shoulder strap, or if you prefer, a set of wheels will be ideal for a days golfing.
When purchasing second-hand golf clubs it is important that the face of the clubs don’t have many dents and deep scratches in them as this can affect the course of the ball. Also be sure to check close to the grip and the head of the club on the shaft to ensure there are no signs of rusting, and finally, look down the clubs like a telescope and twist them to ensure they aren’t bent or warped.

Golf and How to Start Playing the Greatest Sport
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
When I purchased my wholesale golf clubs, I wasn’t actually sure exactly how much I was going to be devoted to the game. I knew that it was a sport that was about getting a bantam ball into a hole in the ground utilizing assorted kinds of clubs, and in the smallest number of totals of stroke possible. I knew that the beginning area was dubbed the tee, and the fine groomed grass area where the ball sinks into the hole was known as the green. And, what I liked best of all was the idea that I was going to be playing in the open air, in gorgeous and natural surroundings. I liked the fact that each player set his or her own tempo, defying one’s own ability. Fundamentally, the player does not play opposite anyone, simply oneself. The game is characterized by what is known as a handicap system, a method which allows one to contend on an equivalent basis, balancing every player inadequacies.
At first glimpse it didn’t appear to me that golf was a sport that called for a great deal effort and with modest or no bodily exertion; nonetheless, hiking more than 3 miles of uneven terrain is most definitely a great workout. Golf involves a set of ethics as well as humility, surrender, honesty and patience, all of which are extremely appreciated and encouraging. It is a sport that can be played throughout any time of the year and at all ages, starting from early youth or all the way into adulthood. Now that I was on the golf course with fantastic golfers, I questioned if the whole sale golf clubs that I had bought were the right clubs for me. They appeared just as great as everyone else’s. My set was standard; with True Temper Steele Shafts and I got a great bargain since Tiger Woods hadn’t been paid a fortune to star in a commercial. My driver was titanium and my teacher asked if it was a Calloway. The irons I had were 17-4 Stainless Steel, equivalent quality the pros use.
Following a lot of persistence and a few lessons at the club, I played a 9 hole scramble with one team. The main discussion on the fairway was: golf clubs wholesalers. Given that golf is a sport with very much skill, I wondered if the wholesale clubs that I had purchased were made fun of by the “pros” playing by my side. Meanwhile my partner missed a par putt that ended up right besides the hole, one of my opponents took a club from his bag and said, “Been playing since I was 10. My granddad bought me some hand-me-down clubs, clubs that I played with un until a recently. Bought myself these wholesale golf clubs as a gift for my 40th birthday. It was hard to stop playing with Granddad’s old clubs, a bit of sad, you know? But hey, I just kicked your ass with my wholesalers. What do you think about that?”
I thought that it was the greatest information ever since I’d bought wholesale golf clubs when I knew diddely squat about the game. Now that I understand how to play and am entering a few tournaments, and picking up advice from experienced golf athletes, no doubt I made the right decision in the incredible wholesale clubs that had purchased…for a lot less than name brand prices. Now, I can play and enjoy every second of it!

Learn About Tiger Woods And Golf
Sunday, December 27th, 2009
In August of 1996, the face of golf was forever changed when a very successful amateur player named Tiger Woods officially became a professional golfer. Tiger has been credited with renewing interest in the game of golf. At just twenty-one years old, he brought youth and vitality to the game of golf with his great game and his outgoing attitude.
Woods was a child prodigy who began to play golf at the age of two. In 1978, he putted against comedian Bob Hope in a television appearance on The Mike Douglas Show. At age three, Woods shot a 48 over nine holes at the Navy Golf Club in Cypress, California, and at age five, he appeared in Golf Digest and on ABC’s That’s Incredible.
At the age of 15 Tiger Woods became the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur Open Champion in golf history. He would go on to win the tournament three more times making him the event’s only multiple winner as well as the youngest. Continuing his record breaking career, Woods was the youngest to win the U.S. Amateur Championship which bought him a ticket into the PGA Masters. He tied for 41st making him the only amateur to make the cut.
His professional career has been just as prolific. Immediately upon turn pro, Tiger signed endorsement deals worth $60 million with Nike and Titleist. He played his first round of professional golf at the Greater Milwaukee Open. He tied for 60th place in his pro debut, but would go on to win two events in the next three months, and qualify for the Tour Championship.
Tiger Woods is the only golfer to win the PGA Player of the Year award in the year following his rookie season. The following April, Woods won his first golf major, The Masters, by a record margin of 12 strokes, became the youngest Masters winner, and the first winner of African or Asian descent.
He eventually set a total of 20 Masters records and tied 6 others, and has been the highest-profile golfer in the world ever since. He would go on to win an additional three PGA Tour events that year, and on June 15, 1997, Woods rose to the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time. Tiger Woods achieved this in only his 42nd week as a professional – the fastest ever ascent to the No. 1 ranking.
Currently ranked #1 in the world, there’s no doubt about it that Tiger Woods is one of the greatest golfers of all time. He has made the game of golf fun again as we all watch to see him continue to break records and win tournaments.

How to Improve your Golf Swing Relatively Quickly
Saturday, November 28th, 2009
There’s nothing worse than a bad drive. Some people blame their clubs, but the best golf pros in the world will tell you that after a certain point, there’s no need to upgrade your golf equipment. I’m going to tell you how to improve your swing without buying a new set of clubs.
What could you be doing wrong? You bought the Cobra driver. You spent more for it than your TV and shoes combined. So why does your handicap stay high? The solution to your golf inquiry is actually quite simple, user error. If you’re like most golfers, you don’t need lessons. What you need is a new outlook on the art of golfing.
So, what does someone really need to master golf like Tiger Woods. I have no idea, how Tiger does what he does. I can knock your handicap down by 2 and show how to get better in small steps. What you need is more focus. I’ve seen folks think the shot out for ten minutes, stand at the tee, breathe, and slice the ball 300 yards off course right into a water hazard. It’s not about planning, it’s about pushing all the noise in your mind away. Before you ever hit the ball, relax. You should notice the smell of the air, the feel of the sun on your skin. When you swing, don’t hit the ball as hard as you can. Some folks want that perfect 500 yard drive, and don’t make it half that far for forcing the golf ball into submission. The ball was made to fly, and the club to give it air. You are just a part of the story of golfing. Just let the golf accessories do their job. Strangely, the French have been golfing much longer than Americans. There’s an informative article written by one of these classic golfers, on perfecting your golf swing, if you like the subject you should read sejour stage golf. It also covers the subject of golfing.
Golf is based on natural laws. Social values are mutable. If golfing were based on social values, you would be able to force the game to work. Golf is based on natural laws, and if you want to win, then you must wait and allow the game to play out. The only thing that’s stopping you from winning is the paradigm you’re using. Don’t force golf to progress, just let it happen.
Golf is like life, it takes time, it takes practice, and it takes discipline to succeed. No matter how hard you work it’s important to remember that a good attitude must be the basis of all learning. If you take golf classes, don’t think of it as a daily oblation, think of it as an opportunity. As your attitude changes, your game will improve dramatically.

How To Succeed In The Golf Short Game And Tips To Get Even Better
Friday, November 13th, 2009
Are You Using The Wrong Club?
Using the wrong club in one of the biggest mistakes golfers can make on the golf course. You can improve your golf short game, lower your score and have a lot more enjoyment on the golf course if you can keep consistent with your choice of club that you feel most comfortable with around the greens.
For example, if you feel more comfortable using an 8 iron whenever you are 50 metres out, then use it. Many golfers read magazines, articles or videos that have professionals recommending a certain club and feel they have to do the same as them. What works for some golfers doesn’t always work for others. Stick to what works, for you and feels most comfortable.
Here’s a good example. Whenever Tiger Woods is faced with a shot from anywhere around the green he always uses his 60 degree lob wedge. He doesn’t mix and match his wedges. He sticks to what works for him. It’s what he has practiced with and therefore feels most comfortable with. What he knows is that he can use his 60 degree wedge to hit a flop shot where the ball only goes say 10 metres, and he can also use the same wedge to hit a shot that goes as far as 30 metres just by making a few minor adjustments to his technique. Why? Because this is the golf club that he feels most comfortable with to do the job.
Success in the golf short game has as much to do with your confidence as it does with your comfort levels using certain techniques and shot variety. In due course you will find a ‘go to club’ that works for you every time you are faced with a certain shot. When you are practicing, focus around getting as sharp and precise as possible with your favourite club around the greens. This will pay off big time when you are faced with a similar shot on the golf course.
Stop Over-Analyzing Everything On The Golf Course
Golf much like a lot of sports can often lose its enjoyment for the average golfer because of the constant need to dissect and over complicate on what is basically a simple game. What you want golf to be is enjoyable, confidence building and makes you feel you are in control. What this all means is just letting the game flow and taking it as it comes and not getting too carried away with the results. Let the game come to you and just let it happen.
Most golfers have had a few lessons with a professional, picked up a few tips from a magazine or maybe even learnt something from watching the best players on your television. What you need to do is trust what you have learnt and allow your subconscious to show you the way. Swing the golf club without fear and you’ll be surprised how simple the game of golf can be … in particular your golf short game will improve out of sight.
Grow your confidence by developing a consistent, solid golf swing. The rest of the way the game of game is a matter of hitting the ball towards the green, hitting it again until it’s in the back of the cup.
It may seem way too simple, obviously you need to practice and have the right preparation, but if you spend too much time over analyzing every second of your round you are going to become increasingly frustrated and eventually give up all together. Golf is a great game to be enjoyed. Focus your energy on having a fun round of golf and concentrate only for those few seconds when you are hitting a golf shot.

Grind Out a Winning Score Using Golf Psychology and Golf Hypnosis
Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Have you noticed how good some of the leading professionals are at grinding out a good score, even if they are swinging the club below their best or downright badly. It’s interesting to note that the real greats like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus always seem to be able to do this, however they’re playing, and whatever the “rub of the green throws” at them when they get to the last nine holes of a championship.
If I look back to my early years in golf, before I had any thoughts about golf hypnosis or golf psychology in general, I was lucky to have a fair amount of natural ability. At the same time, I was rather too inconsistent for my liking. It seemed that if I started out a round playing really well, but not scoring that brilliantly, then my golf would gradually go from good to bad to worse and I’d have a frustratingly high score. On the other hand, if I started off playing relatively badly, but scoring ok, then my golf would often improve as the round went on and I’d have a bewilderingly good score. What was really odd was that my score after 6 to 9 holes in these two types of round was often similar.
Back in those days, I was a member at Brookmans Park Golf Club and there was a fairly long and secluded walk around a small lake between the fifth green and the sixth tee. It was also quite common for there to be a bit of a delay on that tee, so all in all there was plenty of time to think. Over a couple of years I began to notice that I could predict my final score when I got to that sixth tee. If I was two over par or better and playing badly, I’d break 80 easily. If I was over par, even by just one shot, and playing really well, then I’d really struggle to break 80.
Now I’m an expert in golf psychology, what do I think I was doing back then and what could you do to avoid the same trap? Well, if I started out the round playing well and scoring badly, I used to interpret that as bad luck or blame the condition of the course for my dropping shots. I also tended to feel that my normally excellent short game had deserted me and try to find out what I was doing wrong. These thoughts rapidly become self-fulfilling prophecies as I found more and more external reasons for my poor scores. I was probably not a nice person to be with!
On the days when I started playing poorly but was scoring reasonably well, I used to marvel at how well I was scrambling. I just seemed to know that if I hit a bad shot, I could scramble a par and move on. As a result, the pressure to hit the ball well went away and I started swinging much more freely and naturally – today I’d call that trusting my unconscious golf mind.
There are many golf psychology, NLP and self hypnosis techniques that can help you if you have a similar problem. One of the best would be to regularly listen to a golf hypnosis audio programme. Other golf mind techniques you can use for this include
• perceiving your bad luck as being good luck, as described in my earlier article entitled Positive Reframing for Better Golf Performance like Justin Rose
• using an NLP resource anchor to help you manage your state. There’s a self-hypnosis script for this in my earlier article entitled Anchoring Resources for Better Golf – an Experience with Self Hypnosis for Golf.

Why, Oh Why, Is The Golf Swing SO Hard?!
Sunday, July 12th, 2009
Why do we find a move that seems so easy to the professionals so incredibly difficult to perform?
Recently I discovered that psychologists believe that we learn differently as adults than we do when we were children. And I believe this may be the key to explaining why we have such a difficult time of it.
The large majority of professional golfers will have taken up golf when they were kids – Tiger Woods was swinging a club well at 3!
But, I would imagine the majority of amateur golfers took golf up when either in their late teens, early twenties or even later in life – as adults.
The psychologists believe that as children we learn from repeating the model that we see – we know that kids are very trusting of what they are told. Yes, they ask lots of questions but they trust the answers given. They see, and are told, and DO.
Now as adults we learn differently. We have already formed opinions about how the world is and how things operate. So when we learn something new we actually test it against the rules that we have already built up in our heads as to what is right and wrong.
Unfortunately for us, the golf swing is actually illogical. That’s where the problem stems from. In our heads we can’t actually accept or believe that that is how the golf swing works. We then trust our instinct and test it against our rules and go back to what we believe is logical.
Here is what is illogical about the golf swing:
A Golf Swing without Effort = A Powerful 300 yard drive
It’s been said before that the secret to the pros swing is that it achieves ‘Power WITHOUT Effort – how illogical is that!
It’s a bit like saying we’re going on a 200 mile car journey, but we’re not going to turn the engine on! No ones going to believe you.
That’s how our brains interpret it – we think there’s no way you can hit a golf ball 300 yards without LOTS of effort.
So next time we coil up on the backswing our brain tells our muscles ‘right guys we need plenty of effort if we’re going to send this ball long and straight’.
Pro’s do actually put effort into their swings to get the ball to go that far (look at Tiger Woods face just before impact and you’ll see what I mean) BUT they put it in at a completely different point in the swing to amateur golfers. They also know the technique that allows them to produce such great results – and it doesn’t involve power, certainly not how the amateur golfer understands it.
Amateur golfers think you need to start the golf swing powerfully BUT the pro golfers know that you put the effort in at the bottom of the swing.
If you try and take this point on board this will start the process of adjusting your mind.
Over the next few pages I’m going to OPEN your EYES to how the golf swing actually works – much of which us amateurs don’t appreciate.
Understanding is the 1st key to unlocking your golfing potential.
Towards the end of my book I’ll show you where to get a piece of software that will by-pass your conscious mind and reprogram your sub-conscious mind to believe what you will see and start to understand about how the pro golf swing works. How YOU can swing powerfully without effort.
EYE-OPENER No. 2
What part of the body contributes the most to generating the maximum speed of the club head?
This single answer allowed me to make a huge leap in my understanding of the golf swing, and in everything I had seen and read about the golf swing none of it emphasised it enough.
I carried out a survey on the Internet over several weeks and asked visitors to my web site the question:- What part of the body contributes the most to generating the maximum speed of the club head?
Only 20% got the answer correct – That’s only 1 in every 5 golfers! And these golfers had a wide range of handicaps down to single figures.
Interestingly this figure corresponds to another golfing statistic – Did you know that only around 20% of golfers have a handicap of less than 18? It made me wonder whether the misunderstanding of the fundamental aspect could be the one thing that is holding so many golfers back.
Which part of the body do you think creates the maximum speed of the club head?
Is it:
Shoulders
Arms
Hands
Hips
Legs
Torso
wrists
(Graphics and explanations omitted here)
….So the answer to the question that I posed above is that it is the hands (or wrists) that contribute the most to generating the maximum club head speed. The club is moved through over 180 degrees whilst the arms move through less than 60 degrees – all of the rest of the movement of the head of the golf club is generated by the movement of the hands. Unfortunately the large majority of golfers think that it is with the shoulders and arms.

How Personalized Golf Novelties Can Make Every Event a Success
Monday, July 6th, 2009
You’ve seen them everywhere you go; on TV, in the stores, on the course, even your last company golf tournament. Personalized golf novelties can very effective in almost every situation. Whether it’s advertising, promotion, celebration, or identification, these items are great.
Personalized golf tees are a great promotional tool that can be used almost like a form of business card. They can be imprinted with your name or business website on them in just about any color and size. The great thing about them is how economical they are. This type of advertising can be bought in large bulk quantities that are very cheap.
Personalized or logoed golf balls are often used as wedding favors with the bride and grooms name and special day imprinted on the ball as a memory for the guests. These logoed golf balls are also used for identification of your own ball on the course. Since every player is required to have a unique distinct marking on their own ball this is the perfect way to do it. Even the great Tiger Woods has his name marked on his golf balls. This can help prevent anyone else hitting your ball (and gaining a penalty) if your name is tattooed on it visibly.
You can also use these other golf novelties such as hats, visors, or t-shirts, as prizes at company parties, golf tournaments, picnics, or as simple little bonuses. They work as great advertising for the company. Everyone loves to get a free hat or t-shirt to wear so you can’t go wrong.
As you see on television or simply on the pro tours many players are endorsed and paid big money to wear some of these personalized novelties. The thing is you don’t have to be a celebrity or a pro golfer to use these little promotions or pieces of memorabilia to your advantage. They can be used by anyone in the most creative ways possible.
Whether you’re a big golf fan yourself or you know that your audience or guests enjoy the game, don’t be afraid to use one of these great little golf novelties. They can turn out to be a very effective tool or simply something to put a smile on your face.
